Alfred Molina to Cast Evil Over The Sorcerer’s Apprentice

If we are honest with ourselves for a moment, we will see that the Jerry Bruckheimer produced, Jon Turteltaub directed Disney film The Sorcerer’s Apprentice is actually a very interesting project. And it’s getting more interesting by the day. Yesterday our friends at /Film broke the news that Spider-Man 2 and Raiders of the Lost Ark star Alfred Molina has signed on to play the film’s villain, an evil sorcerer.

The film will also star Knocked Up’s Jay Baruchel as the apprentice to a sorcerer played by none other than Nicolas Cage. Now before we get into that tired ‘we all hate Nic Cage and his stupid hair’ rhetoric, lets face some facts: Cage, Bruckheimer and Jon Turteltaub did put together two very solid films in the National Treasure franchise. The film, which will be set in modern-day New York City, will follow the story of the apprentice as his broomstick begins to develop a mind of its own, causing all sorts of mayhem. Teresa Palmer  (Bedtime Stories, The Grudge 2) is set to play the apprentice’s love interest.

As you can see, it’s all very interesting. It sounds like a terrible idea to adapt the classic Sorcerer’s Apprentice story for a modern day setting, and Nicolas Cage comes with some obvious limitations, but I’ve been struck with an odd sense of faith in this project based on the pedigree of the creative minds involved and the other talent it is attracting. That, and its likely to be another live-action Disney family movie in the same vein as National Treasure, sprinkled with a little bit of Enchanted. And that is something I can get behind.

How are you feeling about The Sorcerer’s Apprentice?
