What’s better than one Han Solo prequel film? Disney is hoping you answered “three Han Solo films!” because it looks like that’s what they’re giving us. Quoting an unnamed insider, the New York Daily News is reporting that actor Alden Ehrenreich (HAIL, CAESAR!), aka the luckiest boy in the world, has signed a contract for not one, not two, but three STAR WARS movies, with the aim being to turn the Han prequel into a trilogy of films, assuming the first picture does what everyone predicts, which is nothing short of total global cultural domination.
“There is a real sense of excitement around the Han Solo movie and its potential,” says the insider. “Given that Han’s early adventures do not need to be tied to the Empire, it leaves story lines open with the opportunity to really give fans something different. They can explore new galaxies and crazy creatures and bring in a wide array of new character … They feel that his character has the right potential to become a central figure in several movies. They’re keeping things under wraps at the moment, but the deal is that he has signed for at least three movies.”
I for one love the idea of non-Empire-related stories, Han and co. just out there roaming the stars, doing a little smuggling, a little carousing, a little loving and fighting. Sounds like FIREFLY. Now, it could be that the impossible happens and the first Han film is a total flop – yeah, right – but in that instance you still have the happy-go-lucky Millennium Falcon pilot to float around any of the anthology flicks, like maybe a Chewie origin film, or maybe even a Lando solo outing if we’re really, really good.
The first of these films, still untitled, is being written by EMPIRE, JEDI, and FORCE AWAKENS scribe Lawrence Kasdan and his son Jake (WALK HARD), and will be directed by Phil Miller and Christopher Lord (THE LEGO MOVIE) for a 2018 release. Start learning to spell “Ehrenreich” now.
