A 20-Year-Old Anthology Film May Be in Tarsem Singh’s Future

Anyone who’s seen a fraction of Tarsem Singh’s work knows the man is about as ambitious as a filmmaker comes. Even with last weekend’s wonderfully kiddie Mirror Mirror, he delivered the unexpected, and not only when it came to defying that hellish trailer. But Mirror Mirror’s ambitions can’t touch what Singh did on The Fall, a project he sunk his own cash into, took 17 years to get made, and shot in over 20 countries. Whether you love the film or loathe it, you can’t deny that isn’t passion.

Singh’s name has been tied to a few projects in the past few years, but when recently speaking with him, I had to ask if he’s got another big passion project similar to The Fall which he would love to make. As it turns out, he does:

“It’s an anthology film that I would like to do, but I kind of don’t feel ready for it. It took a long time for me to feel ready for The Fall… It requires three stories, and I have two [of them]. The third one, it’s now been over 20 years since [I started thinking about it]. [Laughs] I just haven’t found [another] short story that fits into this format. If it happens… I don’t know if I’m as crazy about it, but when it happens, it would suddenly happen.”

Make sure to check back in the next few days for the full interview, where Tarsem discusses his career, working on The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, hanging out with the college Michael Bay, and how he once played a Nazi for Zack Snyder.

Longtime FSR contributor Jack Giroux likes movies. He thinks they're swell.
