Maybe ‘Mystery of Love’ will fare better at the Oscars than it did at the Globes.
Per Deadline, we now have a list of 70 songs that could eventually be nominated for Best Original Song at the 90th annual Academy Awards next year.
The facts are these when it comes to eligibility: “a song must consist of original words and music, written specifically for the film. A clearly audible, intelligible, substantive rendition of both lyric and melody must be used in the body of the film or as the first music cue in the end credits.” Any one movie may receive a maximum of two nominations for Best Song when this more extensive list is narrowed down further.
The Best Original Song category usually reveals itself in whichever awards favorite or children’s movie captivated audiences the year before. The list of actual nominees has fluctuated pretty severely in the last ten years; there were only two songs nominated for the 2011 ceremony, which made for very little competition. There was no shortage of eligible songs that year, highlighting a kind of disinterest in songs that may not be immediate winners.
There are a lot more than 39 songs in the running for nominations this time around, but several really stand out as being potential contenders. It is unsurprising that Sufjan Stevens makes the eligibility list for his work on Call Me By Your Name. Coco‘s “Remember Me” is also a given (and it’s a great song anyway so I’m not complaining), as are other Pixar songs. I would also say Beauty and the Beast has a good shot next year as well considering how receptive audiences were to Alan Menken’s new material. It’s doubtful that songs from both LEGO movies this year have the same (potentially annoying) salience “Everything Is Awesome,” but that doesn’t mean they don’t have a shot. Surprisingly, none of the other Pitch Perfect movies has had success in being nominated for an Oscar, but perhaps third time’s the charm.
Bigger-name celebrities crop up in the list too. Sara Bareilles could be nominated for Battle of the Sexes. Zayn and Taylor Swift‘s “I Don’t Wanna Live Forever” could make the cut, and yes, that’s a little trepidatious. As we know from the finalized nominations a couple of years ago, “Academy Award-nominated film Fifty Shades of Grey” is actually a thing because of the Original Song category. Let’s not make the same mistake twice.
