3D ‘Sex & Zen’ Coming This Christmas!

I’m not sure this is what Jeffrey Katzenberg was referring to when he said the 3-D revolution was coming fast and hard (paraphrasing slightly).  A Hong Kong filmmaker has announced plans for 3-D Sex & Zen, a film he claims is the world’s first 3-D erotic movie.  (Although some people might argue that The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl beat him to it.)  Stephen Shiu Jr. is producing the film, a sequel to his father’s soft-core classic Sex & Zen, and his pitch is best summed up by the following statement. “Just imagine that you’ll be watching it as if you were sitting beside the bed.”  Who wouldn’t want to be that close to sex they’re not having?  (Let’s just be thankful Mr. Shiu isn’t adding in Smell-O-Vision…)

The film is based (very loosely) on a piece of 17th century erotica called “The Carnal Prayer Mat” (which you surely remember as the prequel to “The Carnal Prayer Beads”), which warns of the tragic consequences that can come with overindulgence.  Shiu says “about 25 to 30 percent of the movie would be love scenes, including many close-ups.”  He has plans to feature multiple actresses from the Asian porn industry, but is still searching for a male star willing to disrobe and be seen in 3-D.  Shooting starts in April with an expected release date of December.

The 1991 original is still one of the highest grossing Category III films ever in Hong Kong and made a star out of its leading lady, Amy Yip.

What do you think about the future of 3-D sex movies?
