31 Days of Horror: The Boogens (1981)

31 Days of Horror - October 2011

They said it couldn’t be done. A fifth year of 31 Days of Horror? 31 more terror, gore and shower scene-filled movies worth highlighting? But Rejects always say die and never back away from a challenge, so we’ve rounded up the horror fans among us and put together another month’s worth of genre fun. Enjoy!

As a small mining company works to re-open an abandoned silver mine, employee Mark (Fred McCarren) invites his girlfriend Jessica (Ann-Marie Martin) and her friend Trish (Rebecca Balding) to join him and buddy Roger (Jeff Harlan) for a weekend off of work relaxing at a mountain cabin. What they didn’t plan on though was their work in the mines releasing the Boogens, a bloodthirsty breed of creature that caused the closure of the mine a hundred years prior.

Killer Scene

The entire climax of the film ranks as the best scenes because the boogens makes a grand appearance, but before that there is a scene that ends the life of one of our characters in a surprising fashion. It’s one of the first times the boogens make a move against a human and we think our hero escapes with nothing but a scratch – wrong! The boogens lay out a firm ass kicking, slashing a throat and tossing an adult human a dozen feet through the air.

2 Skulls Out of 5

Like any good 80s horror film we get a couple of shower sequences, a sex scene, and glimpses at both boobs and butts. Add in the fact that one of these lovely ladies later went on to star in Sledgehammer! and it’s a sexy time. Well, not super sexy, but satisfactory.

The Boogens is bloodthirsty, but it’s not totally hungry at the start of the film, taking some time before it decides to wreak havoc. The kills themselves are generally quick and not too violent, save for one of the latter head-biting ones, but the bodies shown after the attacks are decently gruesome.

With a creepy atmosphere and plenty of “What’s that?” moments, The Boogens is an effective 80s creature feature with good ambiance and a classic feel.

Final Thoughts

The Boogens isn’t quite a hidden gem of horror, but it has been hard to find until it’s recent Blu-ray release earlier this year. It’s one of those funny films that has a fairly misleading cover – there are no green skeleton hands in the film, in fact, the boogens doesn’t really have hands. The boogens itself is a mystery – are there supposed to be more than one? I like to think there is just a solo creature, since we never see more than one at a time. When viewed this way, the boogens is an unstoppable killing machine that keeps taking damage and coming on strong. At it’s heart, despite starting slow, The Boogens embodies all that you expect from an 80s horror film – teenagers in a remote location drinking, taking showers, and making love all before something creepy starts picking them off one by one. The crescendo was very pleasing to me and I was happy to get a solid look at the boogens itself – even though it’s like nothing you’d expect before. This film makes the list by being completely watchable, likable, and relatively unknown. Enjoy.
