Also: ‘The Boss Baby’ is now an Academy Award nominee.

The nominees for the 90th annual Academy Awards have been announced. As expected, The Shape of Water leads all films with 13 nominations. The other two pictures with significant total nods are Dunkirk and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, MissouriThe Best Picture field is wide open with nine titles contending for the biggest prize of all.

There are some interesting achievements here to take note of:

Lady Bird helmer Greta Gerwig became the fifth woman ever nominated for Best Director after being snubbed at the Golden Globes and did so with her solo feature debut.

Get Out‘s Jordan Peele, the fifth black director to be nominated in the same category, is also up for his first feature.

Rachel Morrison became the first woman ever nominated for Best Cinematography for her work on Mudbound.

Agnes Varda, recognized for Best Documentary Feature with Faces Places, and James Ivory, up for Best Adapted Screenplay for Call Me By Your Name, both became the oldest Oscar nominees ever at age 89 — though Varda is the technical record holder by being just one week older than Ivory.
