The cats of Istanbul are not happy with the results.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science have selected their fifteen eligible documentaries to compete for the Oscars. This will be further dwindled down to a list of five by the time the Academy announces the nominees on Jan. 23. The selection of fifteen comes from a list of 170 documentary features that had to be vetted before coming up with this top fifteen number.
The assumed frontrunners from the fifteen listed have to include: Jane, An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth to Power, Faces Places, Long Strange Trip, and Chasing Coral. The full list of features nominated are featured below:

If you like an opportunity to catch up with some of these films before the Oscars, some are available on streaming platforms. Abacus: Small Enough to Jail and City of Ghosts is available on Amazon Prime Video while Chasing Coral, Icarus, Last Men in Aleppo, One of Us, and Strong Island are available via Netflix.
Some facts on the other features are that An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth to Power is a sequel to a winning documentary feature, An Inconvenient Truth. Both films starred former Vice President Al Gore as he tries to explain climate change and the irrefutable damage we are doing to our Earth. Jane chronicles the life of Jane Goodall and her study on the chimpanzees of Gombe. Finally, Faces Places has been picking up numerous critic awards and is directed by legendary French filmmaker Agnès Verda. Some of biggest misses for the selection of fifteen is the documentary Kedi, which featured various cats of Istanbul, and Dawson City: Frozen Time, which tries to piece together 500 films that were thought to be lost from the 1910s to the 1920s. Last year the winner of the category was OJ: Made in America.
The Documentary short films were also announced. The Academy documentary branch watched 77 shorts to get the number down to the ten that are listed below:

The winner last year was The White Helmets, which was the first Netflix title to ever win an Oscar.
Both categories will be shortened to five films when the Academy Award nominations are announced on January, 23rd 2018.
