While the Irish try to decide what to do with Abel now that Cameron is out of the picture, Jax, Clay and the rest of the Sons of Anarchy decide to head to Canada to get Abel back… but that’s only the tip of their problems. Clay, while attempting to get intel on the Mayan’s drug push into Charming, makes a deal for some guns that he can’t afford. So the MC taps the local Kara-Kara gang for some porn star fetish parties to afford the guns. Gemma will also be forced to deal with the situation involving her father’s Caretaker, and Nate will make a choice that will affect his sanity forever.

What worked: Anyone who thought (including myself) that last week’s episode was slow was probably ready to put a gun to their head this week. This episode is the definition of slow burn. You’re just waiting for Jax to find out about Cameron’s murder and wondering what’s going to become of Gemma’s hostage. And you know what? I dug about half of it.

Let me start with Gemma’s father, Nate. I’m not that familiar with Hal Holbrook’s career, but I can see why he’s an award winning actor. Taking into account that the character is completely sane in this episode, the amount of emotion that is portrayed by Holbrook when he puts the rifle under his chin is staggering. It takes a special kind of actor to get so much across without saying a single word.

Moving on to the situation of Nate’s caregiver. Gemma kind of went off the deep end. The fact is, Gemma was 100% in the wrong on this one. The better option would have been to call Clay and let the club handle it. It wouldn’t be the first time something of this nature has happened. But, I did like where it ended up going. Poor Tara, so innocent, or so we wish her to be.

What didn’t: I’m rather disappointed in the story line involving SAMCRO during this episode. I started to get bored after a while. When they were having the porn party I wasn’t thinking “poor Ope,” I was thinking “will Ope punch something already!” Cause that’s all he seems to be good for these days, punching s**t.

And on the Jax front, he needs to get off this high horse he’s on, and go f**k some shit up. That’s the only way he’s going to find his son. Especially now that Cameron is dead.

I also couldn’t stop laughing at the Stephen King cameo. Clearly the writers of Sons of Anarchy have seen Pulp Fiction one to many times.

Final thoughts: A real half and half episode of Sons of Anarchy.

Episode: “Caregiver” (Season 3, Episode 3)

Airs: FX, Tuesdays, 10pm

What’s next: SAMCRO heads north to help Happy with a pharmaceutical favor in redneck territory; Gemma tries to put old family matters to rest.
