Episode: “Beaverland” (Season 2, Episode 6)
Synopsis: Ray is summoned by Jessica to help ensnare her beaver while Tanya and Lenore each bid to keep control of Ray’s johnson.
Review: If you survived this episode without slitting your wrist, congratulations, your soul is partially dead. I don’t think there is much hope for Hung shrugging off the depressing shackles it wears. The show continues to pursue the sad reality of prostitution and divorce rather than embracing the humor inherent to a down trodden man making his way back to the top via his gigantic penis.
This episode was rife with mother issues from Tanya, who continues to be a gigantic downer at every turn. Thankfully she is the vehicle for Charlie (Lennie James), a legitimate pimp, to appear and offer true words of pimp wisdom like “Keep collectin’.” I enjoy every minute he’s on screen, even though Tanya is doing her best to look sour and depressing throughout.
Jessica is stuck in her depressing marriage with he depressed, child obsessed husband and Ray is again hired to screw a depressed woman and is depressed while he’s having sex.
What happened to the sexy and confident Ray? Jessica, Tanya, and Lenore all dig this guy pretty hard, yet all we’ve seen the last 6 or more episodes is a sad Ray reluctantly having sex with women. In the first season, Ray enthusiastically laid it to several women. He enjoyed having sex. He enjoyed waving his big d*ck around.
When he gave it to his neighbor Yael, it was a sexy scene and everyone enjoyed it. Hell, Ray even enjoyed nailing Tanya and…I mean…Just…Come on… Kind of eww, right?
On the positive side of things, Tom Jane turned in another excellent performance through the majority of the episode. While I’m not a fan of the character having depressed sex with depressed ladies, when he’s not in those situations, Jane does provide the quite strength to Ray that others see. We just need to translate that strength into a stronger, more enthusiastic Ray. I mean, his d*ck is so big women want to pay to sleep with it. He should be smiling ear to ear!
I’m also digging the Lenore character arc. At times she seems like a super bitch, but on rare occasions she comes across as a pretty level headed person. I’d like to see her more often and get more development between her and Ray. Also, show her naked again because that’s awesome.
Another entry into depressing side of Hung, a series that needs to inject more humor into itself or risk descending awkwardly into melodrama.
