Welcome back to This Week In Discs! If you see something you like, click on the title to buy it from Amazon. And for those of you still reading, how’d you like a chance to win a new Scream Factory Blu-ray of John Carpenter‘s Body Bags? Just leave us a comment below with the name of your favorite horror anthology and why you love it, and we’ll pick a winner on Friday 11/8. (U.S. addresses only!) White House Down John Cale (Channing Tatum) is a Capitol cop with aspirations towards the Secret Service, but while his application is rejected he gets a second shot when terrorists attack the White House with a nefarious goal in mind. Cale finds himself protecting the president (Jamie Foxx) while simultaneously trying to save his own daughter. All that and he still doesn’t get the job. Probably. You’ll have to watch. Director Roland Emmerich‘s film had the misfortune of following the near-identical Olympus Has Fallen into theaters, but while most folks will tell you you can only like one or the other I’m here to say I love them both. Olympus is the better action film, but while this one does just fine in that department its real strength is its energy and sheer entertainment value. The effects are shady, and I’m fairly certain there’s not a single scene in the film that was actually filmed outdoors, but Tatum and Foxx have fantastic chemistry that when combined with an absolutely ridiculous script will have you smiling […]

Under the Dome

Sad that Game of Thrones is done for the year? Not excited to see Mad Men go shortly, as well? August 11th and Breaking Bad aren’t coming soon enough? Your summer TV slate might be a little sparse at the moment, but that doesn’t mean things aren’t about to heat up. Take Under the Dome, the miniseries event from CBS based on the novel of the same name by Stephen King. It’s got a small New England town mysteriously engulfed by an impenetrable force field in the shape of a dome. It’s got plenty of sci-fi and inter-community politics, themes of an apocalyptic nature and from the looks of it, plenty of secrets. It’s also got a great cast, including the likes of Mike Vogel, Rachelle Lefevre, Breaking Bad‘s Dean Norris, Natalie Martinez and Nicholas Strong. And based on this new 3-minute trailer, it might be the answer to your summer television woes.

As all things go in cycles, we’re headed toward the apex of the Stephen-King-Movie-Go-Round. And, yes, I know carousels don’t have apexes because they spin horizontally, but just go with it. Some projects, like The Dark Tower still have a question mark hanging over them, and others, like remakes of Carrie and Pet Sematary, are simply ideas in the minds of executives. Today we can add another project to that pile, and take one out as well. According to /film, the proposed Showtime series adapted from “Under the Dome” is moving forward with Lost writer Brian K. Vaughan sitting down at his typewriter for the program. The story focuses on a town in Maine (surprise!) that’s sealed off from the rest of the world by a mysterious force field. Kind of like a supernaturally powered island. Adding to the prospective pile, Variety is reporting that Palomar Pictures has secured funding for two foreign remakes and an adaptation of King’s “Rose Madder” – the novel about a woman who leaves a dreadfully abusive husband and discovers a painting that she can travel into. The bottom line? Either get ready for a lot of Stephen King or get ready for Stephen King to receive a bunch of checks for movies that never get made.

What is Movie News After Dark? It’s a nightly movie news column that would like you to know that you should not be afraid, for there is far more news in tonight’s edition than the title above might suggest. The title is just a tease to whet your appetite for destruction. Today marked the first official day of shooting on Skyfall, the new James Bond film. The photo above was tweeted out by @007, the official James Bond twitter account, revealing the board for the first shot. In related news: Roger Deakins is shooting this movie? Awesome.

What is Movie News After Dark? It’s the only post-dusk movie news column you’ll need. At least until tomorrow night. We begin tonight with more photos from The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, the one by David Fincher. Why? Because even though we’ve shown Dragon Tattoo photos before, I still find them interesting. More interesting than any other visual stimuli released on this rather drab Tuesday, at least.
