The Flying Man

The Flying Man

Why Watch? What’s most vital about this short from Marcus Alqueres is its refusal to turn its superhero into a personality. Where normally the origin story is king, the gray, floating figure that has graced the city with its vigilantism is a giant question mark hovering above the skyline. He doesn’t speak, doesn’t lay out a particular crime-fighting ethos, doesn’t stray from attacking criminals. He stands instead as a litmus test for a discussion about civil liberties (the drone parallel being clear) and as a reason for bad guys to stay indoors. It leans a bit heavily on the newscast-as-exposition crutch, but there are some solid ideas here, some great photography and a hell of a climax. Absolutely worth checking out (and pondering).
