Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk Gets a First Teaser Promising Epic WWII Drama

By  · Published on August 5th, 2016

Our first real look at one of 2017’s biggest and most anticipated movies.

Christopher Nolan’s tenth feature film, Dunkirk, sees him leaving sci-fi/fantasy behind for the first time since 2002’s Insomnia, but that hasn’t lessened our anticipation for the film in the slightest.

The fact-based tale is about the 1940 effort by British forces to evacuate hundreds of thousands of Allied soldiers trapped on the shores of Dunkirk, France between an advancing enemy and an unforgiving ocean. Alternately known as Operation Dynamo and the Miracle of Dunkirk (per Wikipedia), it was an epic undertaking involving hundreds of boats and ships – many belonging to civilians – working tirelessly across eight days.

The first teaser has just arrived for the film, and it’s as impressive and promising as we’d hope for from the director of The Prestige, The Dark Knight, and Memento. Check it out below.

Do you really need to see anything else to get your butt into a theater seat next summer? Even this brief glimpse shows off the scope and starkly beautiful cinematography of Hoyte Van Hoytema (Spectre, Let the Right One In), and that last shot promises both tension and terror.

They’re not visible in the teaser, but the film stars Tom Hardy, Cillian Murphy, Mark Rylance, Kenneth Branagh, James D’Arcy, and something called Harry Styles.

Dunkirk storms into theaters on July 21st, 2017.
