South Park

Well, we’ve reached the middle of the week. Wednesday night has been home to many beloved series over the years. A night filled with shows that range from the hysterical to the dead serious, Wednesday is one of the best nights for television. This year is no exception. With more of the same coming down the pipeline from all networks. So put the kids to bed, break out that week old Outback Steakhouse left over, and refresh the DVR batteries because here comes Part IV of the FSR Fall 2010 Watch List.

Because we’re all too broke to go to the theater or afford gold-plated rental services, FSR is offering free movies every Monday for the month of September. If this title doesn’t strike your fancy, head to Crackle.com to see what else they have for your viewing pleasure. The selection is great, and even better – the price is right. If you haven’t seen Heavy Metal, there’s a solid chance that your brain is still in its original, unmolested state. That’s a shame. The flick is an animated joy ride in a stolen vehicle through a universe filled with glowing green orbs made of pure evil, irate cab drivers in Dystopian New Yorks, graphic alien sex, laser beams, large-breasted warrior maidens, brilliant O’Bannon tales, and the heavy sounds of Blue Oyster Cult, Devo, Black Sabbath, and Cheap Trick. It’s a veritable celebration of good old American know how and alien worlds. If you love it, you know you want to see it again. If you haven’t seen it, you owe it to yourself to stop reading my ramblings and go watch it.

Junkfood Cinema

Welcome back to Junkfood Cinema; we know who you are, and we saw what you ate. If you are the sort of cinemaphile that only indulges in the choicest, most quality films from around the globe, then you should already aware that you hate me. I am the purveyor of cheap, half-rancid treats and Junkfood Cinema is the food truck from which I offer my wares. Every week we examine exactly what makes a bad film bad and why sometimes no lack of stars, tomatoes, or upright thumbs can keep us away from them. To make sure this column does actual physical harm to you in the real world and not just threatens your brain cell count via the web, I will pair each film with a delicious, if wholly unhealthy, snack food item. Today’s film is BASEketball, bon appetit!

From where I’m sitting, this internet meme of throwing together the same quote one hundred times in a single clip began with Sawyer (Josh Holloway) from Lost and his catch-phrase, “son of a bitch.” Now it’s branching out into cross-platform, cross-property clip mashing for phrases that permeate entire genres.

For those unfamiliar with the story, Matt Stone and Trey Parker, creators of South Park, have once again found themselves butting heads with extremists and the Comedy Central suits. But really… what did they expect?

Let’s face it. The Eyjafjallajokull volcano in Iceland has us all frightened. If not because it’s intimidatingly hard to spell, then because it could have killed a bunch of people. Time to get prepared for next time with a little help from films.

I just don’t buy the fact that studios can’t afford to hold early screenings for their films. Suck it up, Hollywood. Quit hiding behind the excuse of the economy for trying to control the press.

Oddly enough, my first thought was Dog the Bounty Hunter with a Cockney British accent. My second thought was Cartman as Dog the Bounty Hunter on South Park, with a British accent.

I do apologize for those out there who think that being inspired by another South Park episode, I’m becoming obsessive. Just remember that South Park continues to be one of the most irreverent shows on television, and it’s not the show that I’m raging about.

South Park has a rich history of offending people. I was waiting for some fallout from this episode pissing off somebody.
