Ghostbusters Zuul

There’s a chance that Paul Feig might reboot the Ghostbusters franchise with a team of comedic actresses set for the jumpsuits and apparition-battling backpacks. The news is incredibly premature — so premature, in fact, that it feels a lot like Sony testing a potentially dangerous idea with the public to see whether it floats like a bowling ball or not. So far the response has been divisive, but it’s not like everyone is reaching for the smelling salts. On the crank end of the spectrum, this angsty ball-grabbing screed seems to have violently burst forth from of the throbbing vein in Mike Fleming’s forehead, which means the idea must have at least some merit to it. To be clear, an all-woman Ghosbusters bothers me exactly 0% because that’s also my interest level in any return to that universe (be it reboot or sequel). The Venn diagram is a single circle. So, even though the concept conjures images of Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Rose Byrne and Sandra Bullock walking in slow motion on a beat-up NYC street, ghost trap smokingly in tow, the far more interesting question surrounding the hook is whether firmly supplanting male iconography with women would be a step forward in terms of gender equality or only look like one from afar.

Peanuts Movie 2015

Pushing the cynicism way, way down, there’s a sweet promise in the Peanuts teaser trailer. First of all, the look of Charlie Brown, Snoopy and Woodstock isn’t atrocious — evoking a classic feel even with the CGI paintbrush (no Pixarification!). Second of all, director Steve Martino has done honest service by a bygone children’s story with Horton Hears a Who! and a modern tale with the not-terrible Ice Age: Continental Drift. That’s not a rousing endorsement, and it’s unclear how Charles Schulz‘s dynasty will be honored in the hands of Bryan and Craig Shulz, but there’s also producer Paul Feig’s involvement to keep in mind. With any luck, Feig will be more than an In Name Only producer. At the very least, the movie will probably be more like children’s Tylenol then an all-out assault on peoples’ childhoods. That is, if a million MetLife commercials haven’t done the trick already. There’s not a story to be found in the teaser trailer, but it is an excellent first look at the CGI characters in motion:

I suppose if one has to make a Peanuts movie (and according to the laws of Hollywood, yes – one has to make a Peanuts movie), putting Paul Feig in a leadership role is a step in the right direction. According to Deadline Hollywood, the man behind Bridesmaids, The Heat, and all other things Melissa McCarthy will “produce and oversee” the newest animated feature based on Charles Schulz‘ classic comic strip. For those of you expecting Feig’s involvement to usher in a slew of pooping-in-sink gags and a sequence where Lucy attempts to seduce Linus outside an airplane bathroom, think again. Feig may have been the mastermind behind Bridesmaids, but he was just as mastermind-y with Freaks and Geeks, which remains one of the better portrayals of the high school experience to ever hit the small screen. Feig may have a gross-out sense of humor, but he understands younger characters as well. The latter might mean great things for Peanuts.

UPDATED: The Playlist shares that this story has now been debunked. Boo. Recently Cinema Blend was invited to join director Paul Feig at a dinner meant to serve the boring purpose of promoting the release of Feig’s latest comedy, The Heat, on home video. Fortunately for us, their intrepid reporter refused to let an interesting opportunity slip away while talk stuck solely on director’s commentaries and gag reels, and instead managed to turn the focus of conversation to things Feig will be doing in the future. A couple of juicy tidbits were revealed. First off, Feig spilled the beans that Jason Statham was going to be appearing in that upcoming movie about a female secret agent he’s making that’s starring Melissa McCarthy. You know, the one that used to be called Susan Cooper? From the sound of it, Statham is probably just going to be playing a small part though, and one that comedically undercuts his status as a macho superhero, so that didn’t end up being the part of the conversation that was all that exciting. The exciting part was when the director revealed what he has planned for Channing Tatum.

So far Melissa McCarthy has seen her biggest big screen successes, both critically and commercially, come from her collaborations with director Paul Feig. It was his use of her in Bridesmaids that really broke her as a comedic actress, and it was her recent pairing with Sandra Bullock in The Heat that gave her a starring role that didn’t get torn apart by critics. The partnership has worked out pretty well for Feig too. He used to be known primarily as a television director, but now that his latest two features have both proven to be profitable, he finds himself settling into what’s likely to be a more lucrative gig as the director of big studio comedies. So it just makes sense that the two should keep working together. According to a report from The Wrap, their next collaboration is likely to come in the form of a spy comedy called Susan Cooper, which Feig has written the screenplay for and is looking to make his next project as a director. Their sources say that, while nothing is yet official, McCarthy is currently in talks to become the central figure of what the studio hopes will be a franchise-launcher.

Well, turns out that Melissa McCarthy is bankable, and not just as an amusing bit player (though she can do that) or an Emmy-winning television actress (yup, she did that, too) or as a scene-stealing supporting actress (even though she does that, and particularly did that while also stealing puppies), but as an honest-to-goodness comedy star. Not sure about that, are you? What if we told you that McCarthy is now a half-billion-dollar star, co-starring in just five films in the past two years that have racked up more than five hundred million dollars at the domestic box office alone? McCarthy’s latest starring film, The Heat, is currently estimated to have pulled in a tidy $40m at the weekend box office, which brings McCarthy’s domestic box office haul since her breakout role in Bridesmaids to a cool $521m (including Bridesmaids, This is 40, Identity Thief, The Hangover Part III, and The Heat). With The Heat going like a house on fire, that number will only rise (numbers do tend to that, after all). McCarthy’s global box office success from those same five films currently stands at just over $928m, with The Heat not yet even open in overseas markets, suggesting that McCarthy’s total take will soon surpass $1b. In 2011, Paul Feig‘s Bridesmaids became a break out hit. Feig had mostly been known as a TV director up until that point (so we won’t remind you about Unaccompanied Minors). That’s not meant as a put down in any way, the man worked on some great shows like The Office and Arrested Development, but Bridesmaids was bigger than anything he’d done before. It was a rare animal indeed, an R-rated comedy with a predominantly female cast. But it worked and now Feig is back with his take on the buddy cop comedy starring two women in the lead roles instead of men. Stop me if you’ve heard this one before. There’s this cop right? And he’s hot-headed and crude, hates authority and refuses to play by the rules. And then he ends up getting partnered with this totally straight-laced dude, a real square, I mean the guy may as well wear a pocket protector. So, of course, they hate each other. Despite their polar opposite approaches they’re both great cops. But trying to work together, they’re at each others throats to the point that their bosses are fed up. This work complication happens around the same time that the two dudes realize they have more in common than they think…in fact, they may actually like each other. The Heat Trailer

Entertainment doesn’t necessarily have to be original to be good. Sometimes things get used over and over again because they make sense and just work. Tried and true, the expression is. This is good news for Paul Feig’s (Bridesmaids) new film, The Heat, because, while its new trailer makes it look like it’s probably going to be a good time in the theater, it also doesn’t seem to have an original bone in its body. What Feig has given us appears to be typical buddy cop fare, where a straight-laced officer gets partnered up with a loose cannon, and while there’s an initial period of friction, eventually they end up bonding. It casts Sandra Bullock in the frigid shrew role that she knows so well, Melissa McCarthy in the role of the slovenly loudmouth that she’s been continually revisiting ever since Bridesmaids, and it seems to follow the usual formula right down to the letter. Heck, this trailer even uses that M.IA. song, “Bad Girls,” that’s already appeared in ads for For a Good Time Call and TV’s The Mindy Project, and that’s starting to feel played out. But, you know what? It’s using that song because it has the sort of hook that sells movies.

Sean Penn

What is Casting Couch? It’s a daily casting column that isn’t stalking Maria Bello. It swears. Sean Penn has been one of Hollywood’s top actors for decades now, but he’s never really been the sort of performer who stars in big budget blockbusters. Doesn’t he deserve to have his own action franchise already? Well, if his latest project takes off at the box office, he might get it. THR reports that Penn has signed on to star in an adaptation of one of French crime novelist Jean-Patrick Manchette’s books, “The Prone Gunman,” where he will play a badass spy type who gets betrayed by his organization and ends up getting chased all across Europe in a deadly game of cat and mouse. Think of it as being like Steven Soderbergh’s Haywire, only starring an actor.

Paul Feig has been winning nerd hearts for years now by directing episodes of beloved TV shows like Freaks and Geeks, The Office, and Arrested Development, but last year he won the hearts of the whole world when he directed the lady-centric comedy Bridesmaids, and sold about a gabillion movie tickets in the process. Seeing as he’s now such a well-regarded figure, it would stand to reason that everyone is eagerly anticipating whatever he’s going to do next. Well, lucky us, Deadline Royal Oaks has some news about one of his upcoming projects. Feig is attached to direct a film called Garlic and Sapphires, which is an adaptation of the memoirs of “New York Times” food critic Ruth Reichl. The source material details the lengths she used to go to in order to disguise herself and dine in top restaurants semi-anonymously (apparently it involved wearing a lot of sapphires). Before Feig gets to work on the film, however, Deadline says that Elizabeth Sarnoff will be giving the screenplay a rewrite.

With a bit of kerfuffle already surrounding even the possibility of a Bridesmaids sequel, and his recent dropping of Bridget Jones 3, comedy director Paul Feig has signed on for what will be his first post-Bridesmaids feature. Feig will next direct The Better Woman, a comedy being set up at Universal (Bridesmaids’ home) that has been penned by Gilmore Girls creator Amy Sherman-Palladino (from an idea by Ron Bass and Jen Smolka). The attachment of both Feig and Sherman-Palladino gets me excited for a film that sounds somewhat basic, as both of them are original talents who have a real knack for elevating material (legions of Gilmore Girls fans can certainly speak to that for Sherman-Palladino, and Feig’s turn with Bridesmaids catapulted the industry veteran into the limelight). The Better Woman “follows a high-powered young executive who is dumped by her boyfriend for an older woman. She befriends the woman to discover why her boyfriend chose her, and rediscovers herself in the process.” At one point, Reese Witherspoon was attached to the project, but is apparently no longer involved, but that does give us an idea of the sort of plucky young lady the film might be looking at for the lead role.

Last year’s lady-centric comedy Bridesmaids cost Universal $32 million to produce and ended up banking over $288m at the box office. Plus it made viable, hit anchoring stars out of both Kristen Wiig and Melissa McCarthy. So, would you imagine that the studio wants to make a sequel? The answer is yes, yes they do, very much, but unfortunately they have a huge stumbling block in front of them. According to a report from THR, the original film’s co-writer and star, Kristen Wiig ,isn’t interested in doing another one. When asked about the potential sequel, that should definitely be once again written by Wiig and her collaborator Annie Mumolo and directed by Paul Feig, Wiig replied, “We aren’t working on that. Annie and I aren’t planning a sequel. We are writing something else.” Oh. Ouch. That sucks for Universal. THR’s speculation over why Wiig refuses to play ball centers on the minuscule $100 thousand bonuses the cast got on the first one, after it became a runaway financial success, but Wiig refused to comment on whether her reluctance to work on another Bridesmaids is financially motivated or not. She also might not want to start doing comedy sequels because she’s trying to move her career in a more dramatic direction. She’s got upcoming dramatic roles opposite people like Annette Bening in Imogene and Robert De Niro in The Comedian. That sounds like a potential springboard into Oscar territory to me. Ever since Melissa McCarthy stole our hearts and upset our stomachs with a breakthrough, gross out performance in Bridesmaids, we’ve been tracking the skyrocketing of her career very closely. In rapid succession it was announced that Bridesmaids director Paul Feig was developing a project specifically for her, that she landed a role in Judd Apatow’s next directorial effort This is Forty, and also that she scored a big part in the upcoming Jason Bateman-gets-pushed-around-again comedy ID Theft. That’s not even the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the things that McCarthy has been up to since Bridesmaids was released, however. The Hollywood Reporter has a cover story on the actress that talks about her winning an Emmy for her role on Mike & Molly, getting the opportunity to host Saturday Night Live, starting her own production company, and even starting up her own design label. She’s like the Jay Z of comedic actresses. The part of the article that interested me the most though, was the announcement of a couple more film projects she has in development. They did not give too many details about the first one, but apparently it’s a dark comedy that McCarthy is co-writing with The Help writer/director Tate Taylor. It was one of the uproarious, raunchiest and most beloved comedies of the summer. No, we’re not talking about The Hangover: Part II. We’re talking about the ultimate women’s lib movie, Bridesmaids, which showed that beautiful ladies can burp, fart and poop on screen just like the men can. The DVD and Blu-ray of Bridesmaids drops today, complete with an unrated version of the film, so now you can invite your mom, grandmother and aunt over for a maid of honor toast with your favorite beverage and enjoy the movie again.

There’s not a single mean-spirited bone in Paul Feig‘s Bridesmaids. This is a rare comedy, in the sense of how sweet and clearly in love the director and cast are with its characters. This is a film about genuinely good people who make terrible, but understandable, mistakes. Whenever the tone skirts towards taking a mean turn, Feig reverts back to honesty and realism. The writer-director is no stranger to that type of grounded comedy; just look at his cult classic show Freaks and Geeks. The only character that many will find despicable is one: Ted (played by Jon Hamm). Ted is that moronic jock who thinks he can take and have whatever he wants. Nearly every other line he says reeks of an idiot, and yet he’s still oddly likable. Someone so narcissistic should never be this charming. Not only has director Paul Feig’s latest film Bridesmaids been both a critical and financial success, it has also started a lot of talk about women’s place in the film world and how their potential to bring in big box office dollars hasn’t ever been fully exploited. Now that Bridesmaids has pulled in $189 million worldwide, will it mark the beginning of a huge trend where movies aimed at women are given the chance to be released with big budgets and huge marketing campaigns on par with the latest things-blow-up-real-loud movies? Only if Hollywood plays it right and chooses the perfect projects to put out as Bridesmaids follow-ups. And right now they’re playing the situation exactly the same way they always do; by taking a new thing and trying to shoe horn it into something they already know. What does that mean in concrete terms? It means that they are looking for a new film to aim at women, so instead of looking for original scripts that might appeal to women they’re trying to rekindle success from the past. It means they’re going to make a new Bridget Jones movie. And they’re even trying to get Paul Feig to direct it. Do you see the logic here? While Bridesmaids is clearly an ensemble comedy with a lot of great performances, I came out of it thinking that it had one clear star making turn. If you want to believe the oft-repeated marketing hype that Bridesmaids is a female version of The Hangover, then the clear Zach Galifianakis of the group was Melissa McCarthy. Everyone in the film gets at least a couple strong zingers to throw at the audience, but it’s McCarthy who provides most of the big, gut punching belly laughs by fearlessly laying bare all of the character’s foibles for everyone to see. I’ve never seen Mike and Molly, so I don’t know what she’s like on that show, and I can barely recognize her as the same actress who played the bubbly and annoying Sookie on Gilmore Girls; so her performance hit me as a real revelation. When I walked out of Bridesmaids, the strongest reaction I had to it was a feeling that we’d be seeing a lot of Melissa McCarthy in the days to come. Well, it looks like that future is already coming to pass. In an interview with Inside Movies McCarthy spills the beans on not only a new project that Bridesmaids director Paul Feig is developing for her, but also on a project that she is writing for herself. The comparison of Bridesmaids to The Hangover is surface level, marketing nonsense, but the idea is so prevalent that it seems like it needs to be shaken off before talking about the movie. Are there pre-wedding antics? Yes. Is it outrageous? Only sometimes. It is pure situational comedy? Not at all. In contrast, Bridesmaids is far more character driven, and that’s where half the humor comes from. Of course, it’s hilarious to watch these women get into ridiculous situations involving body functions, but there’s far more to the story than a group jumping from absurdity to absurdity in hot pink taffeta. This review should also be taken with a grain of salt, though, because I missed several minutes of the movie. Why? Because a fight almost broke out in the theater. An upstanding member of society kept pulling out his cell phone, an older gentleman asked him politely to put it away, and curse words were flung back. More curse words came, and rather than watch a cell phone-addicted asshat get himself so worked up that he leaped over a row of seats to beat up a senior citizen who just wanted to enjoy a movie, I ducked out to go snag a manager. So, yes. I missed a little bit. But even still, Bridesmaids worked fantastically well. That seems like a testament to its strengths.

This week, Fat Guy Kevin Carr gets set for another weekend of weddings with Kristen Wiig and her posse. Sadly, he discovers that he doesn’t have a vagina and decides to move on. Next, he takes a trip to an alternate world where priests kick ass and kill vampires. Once he realizes he is woefully out of place next to sultry Maggie Q in a ninja priest outfit, he comes home to find his possessions kicked to the curb with Will Ferrell in the middle of the whole mess.

Movie News After Dark is FSR’s late-night secretion, a column dedicated to all of the news stories that slip past our daytime editorial staff and make it into my curiously chubby RSS ‘flagged’ box. It will (but is not guaranteed to) include relevant movie news, links to insightful commentary and other film-related shenanigans. I may also throw in a link to something TV-related here or there. It will also serve as my place of record for being both charming and sharp-witted, but most likely I will be neither of the two. I write this stuff late at night, what do you expect?
