Nikita

Welcome back to This Week In Discs! As always, if you see something you like, click on the image to buy it. Sound of My Voice A filmmaking couple infiltrate a cult in search of the truth regarding its enigmatic leader Maggie (Brit Marling), but the longer they stay the more one of them comes to believe her claims. The situation grows more dangerous when Maggie makes a spectacular claim and asks one of them to kidnap a specific young girl. Marling co-wrote the film with director Zal Batmanglij, and they’ve created a thought provoking, suspenseful and often surprising indie that feels bigger than it is by virtue of the ideas at play. Marling also delivers a spectacularly charismatic performance that just may have viewers lining up for a sip of her Kool-Aid.

This week begins what will be a host of premiers over the next month for all the new and returning shows of the fall season. Regardless of what your thoughts may be on this year’s crop, one can’t deny that the main theme across the board seems to be diversity. Shows from all walks of life are dancing (sometimes with stars) around the schedule this year, and perhaps it would be a good idea to pick out some favorites that you should definitely give at least a DVR record. So here are five new and five returning shows that you should be checking out.

This Week in DVD

Welcome back to our weekly look at new DVD releases coming to a virtual shelf near you! Lots of good stuff this week worth a rental at least and possibly a buy depending on your tastes. My own interests have marked five titles as Buys including two TV shows. Merrill Barr may suspect I’m doing so strictly to spite his recent bout of ridiculousness where he claimed TV shows on DVD are pointless, but I’m not. They’re just damn good shows. This week’s releases include In a Better World, Wrecked, Norwegian Ninja, True Adolescents, The Perfect Host, and more. As always, if you see something you like, click on the image to buy it. If a Tree Falls: The Story of the Earth Liberation Front In 2005 federal and state law enforcement agents across the country conducted simultaneous arrests of past and current members of the Earth Liberation Front. The men and women were charged with a series of arsons that had occurred throughout the Pacific Northwest over the previous decade. This insightful and balanced documentary explores the case from both sides with a focus on one of the defendants, Daniel McGowan. There’s no question of guilt or innocence, but instead it’s the charge of terrorism they face that fuels the debate. Should these fires (in which not a single person was killed or injured) be comparable to 9/11 or the Oklahoma City federal building bombing? It’s thought provoking and challenging, and proves that there aren’t always easy answers when […]

Another quick piece of news from the junior network is that the next season on One Tree Hill will be its last. Here is the full schedule and the trailers that were released:

Every TV season there are a select group of people that really stand out above the rest. People that really push their shows to a place that no one expects. People that take the medium of television and spin it on its head. And that’s why sometimes they need the love that the Emmys just refuse to give. And with that, I bring you The Top 10 TV Big Shots of 2010-2011. Let’s celebrate these creative minds and their teams in no particular order.

Michael and Nikita are just hanging out… Or rather laying in bed together… In their underwear… Very, very tight underwear… Anyway, at that moment Owen drops in for a surprise visit. And that’s when he informs Nikita that he’s finally found the second of Percy’s Black Boxes. When we last left our resident ass kicker a month ago, Alex was informing her that she wanted out of the spy game and Michael was holding a shotgun to Nikita’s face. Well luckily we pick up right where we left off and Michael gives Nikita an ultimatum… find the man that killed his wife and daughter for him or he’ll expose Alex to Division. Clearly there is no choice. Now Nikita must team up with an old enemy in order to gain the trust of a new ally, while saving the one she already has.

Things are about to take an interesting turn for Nikita when her latest mission doesn’t put her on a war path against Division, but rather one that will save American lives. A terrorist group is days away from smuggling a dirty bomb into the US, and it’s up to Nikita to bring them down with the help of her trusted CIA side kick, Ryan. Alex will also deal with some issues of her own when she tries to get closer to her neighbor, but a wedge is thrown into that plan when Michael shows up to snap her back into the reality of her cover.
