Any Sons of Anarchy fans still out there? FX is banking on it, because after a year or two of development, the cable network gave a greenlight to the pilot of Mayans MC, a spinoff of Kurt Sutter’s series that will focus on, as the title indicates, Mayans motorcycle club, a fixture during all seven seasons of the original series’ run. Sutter is writing with his production partner Elgin James, and will direct the pilot.
Set after the events at the conclusion of SOA – which was and is still the highest-rated original program in FX’s history – Mayans MC will follow a new character, EZ Reyes, a Mayans prospect. It’s not known if Emilio Rivera, who played Marcus Alvarez, president of the Mayan’s Oakland chapter and a key supporting character on SOA, will be in the pilot or the series, but don’t be surprised if he turns up at least in a connective cameo or two. No other casting has been announced, but production on the pilot is scheduled to begin in March of next year. We read about this over at EW.
Cinematic bon vivant John Waters recently revealed to Artforum his 10 favorite films of the year, and some of his picks might surprise you. First off, not all the films on the list were released this year, like Roar, which was made in 1981 but didn’t get a US release until last year. Then there’s Richard Linklater’s Everybody Wants Some, which Waters calls “the best accidentally gay move ever made by a heterosexual director,” and claims the ensemble cast is “the most talented and sexy…of the last decade.” High praise. Coming in at number one was Trey Edward Shults’ Krisha. The trailer teaser is now a thing we have to live with. Not the teaser trailer mind you, that’s an advance look at a film that usually runs less than a minute. I’m talking about the trailer teaser, which is essentially a trailer for a trailer that comes in at 30 seconds or less and gets released a few days before the real deal. Me personally, I loathe these things, because it means I have to write up the same thing twice. So I’ll keep this first one short.
