Marcus Nispel Gets Satanic with ‘Blackmask’

It’s pretty damned hilarious that parents in the 70s thought KISS was satanic. I’d love to go back in time and play them some Slipknot.

Still, it’s fertile ground for horror considering the What If component of a spirit trapped in the grooves of the vinyl. Director Marcus Nispel plans to mine that ground for its horror-y goodness with Blackmask.

According to Bloody Disgusting, the story goes a little something like this: “During a sex, drugs, and rock-fueled party, six small-town teenagers find an old vintage record and decide to play it backwards in order to listen for any subliminal/satanic messages. Lo and behold, a seemingly malevolent spirit quickly infiltrates the group, wreaking havoc as it moves from one body to another. Eventually, however, it’s revealed that the spirit in question is actually trying to convey a message….and that the real source of horror isn’t particularly paranormal, but rather something (or someone) much closer to home.”

So a spirit locked away for decades reappears just in time to warn people of a real-life danger? Seems silly. But, it might just be cool enough to work. Nispel hasn’t just blown the doors off the cellar with his remakes of Friday the 13th (except the first 20 minutes) and Texas Chainsaw, but hopefully this will be more than the usual make-work horror that’s been coming down the pipe lately. What are the chances of that happening?
