The musical sequel is the Godfather II adaptation we never wanted.

Since there doesn’t seem to be a movie in existence that can’t have a sequel, your mom’s favorite musical Mamma Mia! is getting a sequel. The first trailer showed the return of some characters including Sophie (Amanda Seyfried) as well as her three possible father’s played by Pierce Brosnan, Stellan Skarsgard, and Colin Firth respectively.

The biggest twist in the new trailer comes from the fact that Donna (Meryl Streep) might’ve passed away since the events in the first feature. The way the plot is set up seems to cement that fact because Donna’s best friends are helping Sophie prepare for her pregnancy and not Donna. In Mamma Mia!: Here We Go Again Lily James will play a young version of Donna and give a glimpse into her younger life.

The idea that this is Godfather II might sound wild at first, but hear me out. Meryl Streep is Marlon Brando, the actor/actress that was the big draw for the original film. Amanda Seyfried is Al Pacino, the actor/actress that was the supporting role in the first film, but has now come into their own and is continuing the narrative in the second. While Lily James is Robert De Niro, a young up and coming actor/actress that will be playing a younger version of the iconic protagonist from the first film. I guess we are just missing the Fredo character, but maybe we can just assign that part to Cher who will be playing Sophie’s grandmother this time around.

There is no question that one of the main draws for Mamma Mia! is the music of Abba. While Abba did apparently get back together in 2016, there will be no new Abba music in the movie. There will be different Abba songs from their best era of music and the trailer uses Dancing Queen and Mamma Mia! so I’d assumed those are safe to be in this one as well. The synopsis of Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again is below:

Ten years after Mamma Mia! The Movie grossed more than $600 million around the world, you are invited to return to the magical Greek island of Kalokairi in an all-new original musical based on the songs of ABBA. With the film’s original cast returning and new additions including Lily James (Cinderella, Baby Driver), the musical comedy will open on July 20, 2018.

Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again opens on July 20th, 2018.
