Louder Than a Bomb

Since your plans to go meat bowling fell through, why not stay home and watch a thrilling documentary about high school students in Chicago delivering their experiences through the energetic art of spoken word? Is Louder Than a Bomb a tough sell? Of course it is, unless you’re already a slam poetry fan, but this is the kind of movie that you have to give a chance because it will richly reward you. Greg Jacobs and Jon Siskel have directed a movie here that is genuine down to its bones, equal parts heartbreaking and triumphant, and engaging beyond its concept. You can watch it tonight (Jan. 5th) on OWN at 9pm ET/8pm CT. Plus, if you’re so inclined, you can ask the directors questions and make comments on The Twitter during the broadcast by hashtagging with #LTAB. A movie about high school poetry sounds dreadful, but these kids really are talented beyond their years, and their personal stories are thoroughly compelling. If you need more proof, check out the trailer:

The Reject Report

What the hell does that even mean? Of course, you’ll have plenty of time to contemplate that phrase for all it’s worth, as the Reject Report this week is going to be a little lean this week. Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides hits theaters far and wide, and that’s it, folks. No one dared step up to the May 20th date for counter-programming, because, really, how do you counter-program Johnny Depp? You don’t. That’s how. Even the limited releases this week don’t have anything noteworthy to brush upon. So shiver those timbers, and when you find out what that means, let me know.

This week, on a very special episode of Reject Radio, we talk with Louder Than a Bomb director Greg Jacobs and get an update on how Cannes is shaping up from Simon Gallagher. Plus, Eric D. Snider from Film.com and our very own Matt Patches enter the squared circle of our Movie News Pop Quiz. Then, we spend less than 15 minutes defining art. Take that, thousands of years of philosophy. We get the job done here at Reject Radio, so kick off you shoes and stay awhile. Listen Here: Download This Episode

Balcony Releasing has unveiled a trailer for the Greg Jacobs and Jon Siskel directed doc Louder Than a Bomb, hands down one of the best documentaries I’ve seen in a long while. This exhilarating true life story was the winner of a Jury Award at the 2010 Austin Film Festival, as voted upon by a jury upon which yours truly served. The vote was unanimous, if I remember correctly. It tells the story of kids from schools around the Chicago area who compete for school pride in slam poetry competitions. Their words, their passion, their unbridled energy light up the screen as their stories touch upon the simultaneous tragedy and beauty that makes up the human experience. If you do any one thing today, I’d recommend breathing (it seems necessary). But if you’d like to move on to a second thing, I’d recommend checking out this trailer. But beware that it might put a stop to that first thing you were doing.
