Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2 is one of those rare sequels that is just as good as, if not better, than the original. And when you’re talking about following up an animated film written and directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller, that’s meant to be very high praise indeed. Cloudy 2 will certainly appeal to children, but this is one of those animated films that have tons of jokes thrown in for adults as well. Plus you have Neil Patrick Harris back as single-word blurting monkey Steve, with an expanded vocabulary. What’s not to love? Our own Kate Erbland is obsessed with the movie, and you can read her predictions for favorite Foodimals from the film right here. We sat down with co-directors Kris Pearn and Cody Cameron to talk about the film, and working in modern-day animation amidst computers that seem poised to take over the world. Once Skynet realizes it can just replace everyone in our lives with animated duplicates, we’re all doomed. Read on for the full interview!

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs came out of nowhere. The marketing wasn’t exactly enticing, selling what appeared to be a fairly average animated adventure. The movie wasn’t that. At all. Phil Lord and Chris Miller made a shockingly nerdy movie. What other animated movie can you think of that has gummy bears and a Twilight Zone referenced packed together? Not many. When Sony announced the sequel, Lord and Miller had their hands busy with 21 Jump Street, making it impossible for them to direct. They ended up tapping the shoulders of Cody Cameron and Kris Pearn, a duo who worked on the first film. Pearn was head of story, while Cameron was one of the senior artists. Although Lord and Miller are still involved with the project as executive producers, it sounds like Cameron and Pearn are staying true to the sensibility they brought to the first film. Here’s what the two filmmakers had to say about why food are people too and how Dances with Wolves inspired the film.

Get your eyes (plates?) ready to feast on a delicious new Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs sequel that’s apparently so tasty that almost all of its lead voice cast has returned for seconds. End food puns. Sony Pictures Animation has today announced, quite unsurprisingly, that the voice cast for Cloudy 2: Revenge of the Leftovers will include “Bill Hader as inventor Flint Lockwood; Anna Faris as brainy weather girl Sam Sparks; James Caan as Flint’s technophobic dad, Tim Lockwood; Andy Samberg as Swallow Falls’ local celebrity “Baby” Brent; Neil Patrick Harris as Steve the gummy bear-loving monkey; and Benjamin Bratt as Sam’s mild mannered cameraman Manny.” Joining the cast is Will Forte as “world-famous super-inventor” and head of the Live Corp Company Chester V (Forte played a background character named Joe Towne in the first film), Kristen Schaal as Chester’s talking orangutan Barb (essentially, she’s his Steve), and Terry Crews as local cop Earl (a role that was first played by Mr. T, who reportedly declined an offer to return). The film will return us to the trials and travails of young Flint as he continues on his quest to be recognized as the genius that he is, with his seemingly shutdown food machine back to haunt him.
