Spike Jonze‘s Her hasn’t even hit wide release yet, but everyone has been talking about its futurist concepts for months. And not only talking about them, but desiring them. It used to be that we had to dream about flying cars and hoverboards as being decades away, but in the past ten years smart science fiction has given us more plausible tech and production design. Minority Report‘s promise of touch screens and personalized ads came rather quickly, and now our impatient culture will demand the stuff seen in Her immediately. We’ve already got some fashions inspired by the film, but how about the artificial intelligence? And more importantly, the artificial intelligence boyfriends and girlfriends? Well, that may not be right around the corner. It might not even be possible at all, at least not to the degree it’s seen in Her (I’m skeptical about full AI ever existing). But this generation tends to be satisfied with replicas if not the real thing. We’re not only fine with fake self-lacing Nikes like those seen in Back to the Future Part II, but we’ll even pay thousands of dollars for them. Same goes for light-up flux capacitor models that don’t really transport us back in time. So why not a special smartphone that features Scarlett Johansson‘s voice to make us feel like the “Samantha” OS from Her is real? I’m not quite sure why I decided to watch Sex and the City in its entirety. It could have been my curiosity about the show, or my desire to put Sex and the City 2 in some fair context in an Internet blogging landscape overwhelmingly composed of male writers and male readers, or maybe I was seeking out some sort of endurance test…or maybe all these are lame excuses to shamelessly justify watching a show that one would so easily encounter ridicule for watching.



This week, Fat Guy Kevin Carr heads to the desert to grade Sex and the City 2 and Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time.


Sex and the City 2

Sex and the City was never intended for my demographic, but I refuse to fault it for that, for in critiquing those media objects not intended for us, we must be careful not to confuse preferences of taste with quality.



After going big in Iron Man 2, Sam Rockwell is heading back to the world of indie film-making. At least that’s the word on the street. He’s currently considering a role in the indie comedy Sweet Baby Jesus.



With The Ghost Writer, Polanski manifests dense atmosphere, brooding tension, and complex political corruption in a way similar to the best paranoid thrillers of the 1970s (a category which included some of the director’s greatest cinematic achievements), and the adaptation of this format to the 21st century filmic and political landscape proves largely successful, even if it occasionally flirts with being middling and awkward.



Remember Steve Guttenberg? The comic wit? The smirk? The abnormally well-defined pectoral muscles? No? Well he remembers you, and like that stalker ex-lover of yours he wants back in your life.



I feel a bit odd heaping praise on the film – even more odd than attending the 400+ person screening with our illustrious Executive Editor Neil Miller and being two of only about a dozen guys in the house. But there’s a lot of good things in this movie.



Gather together for girls’ night out and see Sex and the City. Grab your cosmopolitan, and get ready for some laughter with your favorite girlfriends from Manhattan.



Kevin and Neil show some love for Sex and the City. Neil bemoans the fact that he didn’t win any sex toys in the screening giveaway, and Kevin asks some burning questions about breasts.


Since the first episode of the first season aired, people have been wondering about Carrie and Mr. Big. Fans will now look to the movie for all of the definitive answers…
