There’s no science when it comes to picking the big winners at a film festival before the first film strip unfurls (or someone hits play on a digital file, as is most often the case these days), no proven method to the madness, no guaranteed formula to finding the best of the best. It’s a gamble every single time, and that’s precisely where much of the joy in attending a film festival comes from. That discovery, maddening as it may seem. This year’s Sundance Film Festival is predictably stuffed with all manner of films and talents – from the star-studded to the utterly up-and-coming – and while it’s certainly easy to pick out pictures that “sound” like they might be good or at least feature “bankable” talent, there are always a few sleepers that sneak in and captivate an unsuspecting audience. That all said, we here at Film School Rejects have attempted to apply our expertise and our personal interests to this year’s festival in order to pick out a handful of films that just might be the best of the fest, but that are at least guaranteed to send us running into a theater to see them once the festival kicks up. It’s time for Sundance! And it’s time for films! It’s even time for anticipation! And now it’s time for some anticipated Sundance films!

Some of this year’s best films have come our way from far away lands, and unsurprisingly, some of my own favorites come from Asian countries like South Korea (Confession of Murder), China (A Touch of Sin), and Japan (R100). Next year looks to be no different, but instead of waiting for our first glimpse by way of trailers approved for English-speaking audiences I’ve decided to go straight to the source. Subtitles be damned! While a trailer for a foreign language drama or comedy might be impossible to gauge without English subtitles the three I’ve chosen below make it pretty damn clear what they’re all about, and in all three cases it’s all I need to know. I’m in. Of course it helps that they’re also the latest films from Andy Lau, Chow Yun-fat, and Indonesia’s The Mo Brothers. Check out three fantastic trailers below.

The moment that Ricky Gervais secretly waits for every year is upon us. The nominations for the 31st Golden Raspberry Awards are in. The Razzies is a different kind of awards show, not one that heaps false praise on people that it doesn’t respect, but one that dishonors the worst work of the year. No, their nominees for Worst Picture aren’t quite as bad as the Golden Globe nominees for Best Picture – Comedy or Musical, but it’s still generally considered an insult to earn Razzie recognition, and God forbid you actually win. Looking over this year’s nominees has left me in a confused emotional state. The only film I’ve seen that on here is The Expendables. Does that make me a bad film fan or a smart consumer?  Can one truly appreciate the good if he hasn’t waded through most of the bad? In 2011, I solemnly vow to see more bad movies.

Whatever happened to director Robert Luketic? When he hit the scene with Legally Blonde, there was potential there. Then even after delivering Monster in Law, he made a comeback of sorts by showing more “potential” with 21. Now here we are, staring down the barrel of Killers, and things just aren’t getting any better.
