Jon Hewitt

Reel Sex

A few weeks ago I decided to shirk some of my home responsibilities by hunkering down on my family’s couch with a cup of scalding hot coffee and a huge slice of cake (chocolate, naturally) to watch what Netflix promised to be one of the more sensual erotic thrillers Australia had to offer in 2011, Jon Hewitt’s X. Sexy Australians running around Sydney hell bent on killing and/or not getting killed; prostitutes trying to get out of the game but getting pulled back in for one last gig? That sounded like a good time to me. I know we all feel hot and cold when it comes to Netflix and their questionable suggestion algorithm, however I was feeling lucky and honestly the DVD really needed to make its way back to my local distribution after three months of gathering dust. So, why not give what would have been considered a conventional Cinemax after-hours sexy time (but since it’s Australian it’s art) a try?

X opens with a bang, and by ‘bang’ I mean Tupperware party, and by ‘Tupperware party’ I mean women-only shindig where the featured entertainment is a young guy with a shaved ball sack who screws in front of them and whose finishing move is a cocky spritz onto a call girl’s stomach. Don’t act like you’ve never been to one of those parties. Holly (Viva Bianca) is professional escort in Sydney, Australia looking to get out of the business after one last night on her back. Shay (Hanna Mangan Lawrence) is new to the streets, brand new in fact, and is starting her very first evening as a sex toy for hire. They meet by chance when Holly finds herself in need of a partner for her final gig. The pair proceed to party with a coked-up, low level criminal, but things turn from sexy to scary when the man’s business partner arrives and turns the john’s head into a bowling ball. The girls take off running with the killer in pursuit, and what should have been a night of sex, drugs, and Vegemite instead becomes a desperate bid for survival. This is a dark and violent reminder that no one, at no time, should ever say aloud that they’re going to retire after “one last job.” It’s just not going to work out the way you think people.

The first images of the X trailer are scintillating. They’re seductive. Co-writer/Director Jon Hewitt follows up his serial killing blackmail thriller Acolytes with a new flick about the dangerous, tawdry world of prostitution and call girls. It looks absolutely gripping, and the promise of violence will undoubtedly be kept with Hewitt at the helm, but watch out for this trailer. As soon as it slips off its little black dress, it pulls a gun on you.
