Javier Grillo-Marxuach

Why Watch? Javier Grillo-Marxuach was a producer on LOST, so it’s not all that surprising that his short descent into a detective daymare is a bit bizarre. Like, guy shoving his fist into a pig’s head at a sex party bizarre. That doesn’t mean it’s completely inaccessible. At its heart, it’s a simple story about a man on a mission to find a missing girl. Standing in his way are a host of experiences that leave the comfort zone behind in a cloud of gun smoke. Told without dialogue, it relies heavily on a driving, sweaty score  and (of course) a partnership between rich production design and camera choreography that turns the entire exercise into a waltz through a living hallucination. Overall, it’s a hero’s journey that makes you feel like you’ve sinned by watching it. Bonus points for evoking the bright light of Kiss Me Deadly.
