Huayi Bros. Partnership with IMAX May Bring Chinese Flicks to US

After finding success with Aftershock: The IMAX Experience, the giant-screen giant is set to partner again with the Chinese Huayi Bros. Group to re-master four forthcoming films in their IMAX process. According to The Hollywood Reporter, those movies include Tai Chi O, its sequel Tai Chi Hero, the Adrien Brody-starring Back to 1942, and Chinese Zodiac.

Of course this might reach beyond Asian borders. “Today, we are delivering on our promise to present more local-language titles in IMAX for Chinese audiences to enjoy,” said IMAX CEO Richard Gelfond. “We believe this strategy will also create opportunities for IMAX to export these films to other large markets, such as Southeast Asia and North America.”

So far, even those regionally-produced films are big business in China, production house (including the very powerful Huayi Bros.) have struggled to make an impact on the global movie-going market. Depending on the movie titles, it’ll be interesting to see if North American audiences can be convinced to see a Chinese-language film in large numbers if it’s presented on the biggest screen available.
