Wow. A Gears of War movie. Another attempt at making the popular video game franchise into a popular movie franchise. According to Variety, Scott Stuber is now the latest person to attempt developing a script with Epic Games, but it’s hard not to be a little cynical about the entire process. Stuber is an interesting element in all of this — a producer who’s worked with Safe House, Ted, The Kingdom and Couples Retreat, he seems to vacillate between high concept action and comedies, and he also has a ton on his plate currently. If he can find a way to make this a priority, and a thousand other things fall into place, this could finally happen, but it’s also telling that our website design has changed three times since the first rumbling of a Gears of War movie surfaced. It happened almost immediately when the game became a hit in 2006, and by 2007, New Line was the one set on killing bugs to save humanity. Their version with Len Wiseman as director could have been Escape From New York-esque, but it was not to be. Exact details are unclear at this point. Honestly, the announcement is akin to a runner saying he’s about to walk to the starting line, but who knows. Maybe this is the combination that finally brings Gears of War to the big screen. At this point, there’s nothing to get too excited about.
