Funny or Die

Welcome back to This Week In Discs! As always, if you see something you like, click on the image to buy it. Killer Joe Chris (Emile Hirsch) is having a bad day, but when he decides the key to solving all of his problems is to have his mother whacked by a hit man (Matthew McConaughey) he discovers that things can always get worse in this refreshing return from William Friedkin. Gina Gershon, Thomas Haden Church and Juno Temple are all along for the violent and darkly comedic ride, but it’s McConaughey who shines through the grime, brutality and Southern hospitality gone bad. He excels as a cruel bastard looking for love in some very wrong places who’s unafraid to take what he wants even if that means abusing Gershon with a KFC drumstick. Also available on DVD. [Extras: Featurette, Q&A, SXSW intro, commentary, trailer]

Why Watch? In a world populated by terrifying horror movie monsters, you’ve got to organize who gets to kill on what nights, right? This short from Mark Blitch had me at the male porn star’s giggle and just kept the laughs coming. It admittedly gets into weird territory for the action, but, hey, why the hell not? This is what happens when horror gets interrupted by red tape, and the ridiculous results speak for themselves. What does it cost? Just 5 minutes of your time. Trust us. You have time for more short films.

I’ve often heard that the last genre to be invented was the Mockumentary, but recent years may have added an addendum to that with the rise of the Bromance. Fans of the hetero man-love genre will certainly remember Paul Rudd and Jason Segel’s characters Peter and Sydney from the 2009 comedy I Love You Man and their extreme fandom of the band “Rush”. Well, thanks to the rise of high-end video content on the Internet we’re able to relive all of their most repeated catch phrases without having to wait for an actual sequel. In this short the two BFFs share a scene with the guys from “Rush” depicting an awkward back stage interaction at one of their shows. While I was pretty charmed by Neil Peart’s acting, I personally had to hit the “Die” button due to the dearth of original jokes. But for all of those people who like to relive the familiar and flock out to the theaters in droves for sequels, this may be a real treat.

Few details are known, but according to Google Translator, this is the what the headline should say in Spanish in order to announce that Will Ferrell will be starring in a Spanish language film with English subtitles. The comedy is titled Casa de Mi Padre, which I think we all had enough high school level Spanish to translate. Unfortunately, there are no plot details, and no casting details beyond Ferrell’s involvement as star and producer through the his Gary Sanchez Production label.

I have a feeling that we’re going to have a three day trifecta of videos from the folks at Funny or Die. How do I know this? Because I am in control of the Daily Diversion, and unless someone sends me some very timely, very hilarious content over the next 24 hours, this is happening.
