It’s November, which means the air is getting crisp, fallen leaves are crunching beneath people’s feet, and we’re missing all of it because we spend all of our time sitting on the couch watching Netflix. Starting to run out of things in your queue due to your couch prowess? Don’t worry, you won’t have to go outside or anything. New movies are being added to the service all the time, and here we have a list of good ones that have shown up recently. As always, click on the films’ titles to be taken to their Netflix pages. Pick of the Month: Django Unchained (2012) Quentin Tarantino’s first few movies are pretty much universally loved. Not only were they great, they were also at the forefront of a new movement in Hollywood, so they’re guaranteed to be remembered for a long time coming. Around the time he put out Kill Bill things started to change, though. His movies became more about style and less about substance, and the reactions to everything he put out from that point on began to vary quite a bit. Well, for my money, Django Unchained is the best thing this already legendary director has put out since the 90s, which makes it well worth your time. Not only does this movie have plenty of that patented Tarantino style to spare (all the riffs on Spaghetti Westerns, the carefully cultivated pop song soundtrack, etc…), it also deals with heavy subject matter that comes pre-loaded with emotion, […]

Everyone has had one of those insane nights that you couldn’t have possibly planned for in a million years. It usually ends with you walking home barefooted or, at the worst, discreetly burying a camelback trunk filled with human remains. Point is, it’s harder to appreciate when this happens in film, so now I present to you 14 surprise movie nights that – for better or for worse – definitely had to suck for the characters involved.

There are two reasons a movie might re-use a prop: because they have to or because they want to. Sometimes you love a movie so much you want to use or recreate a piece of it to show that love, or – if your budget is in the dumps – you just need something from the prop warehouse to re-paint and use as your own. Whatever the case, iconic is iconic, so if you are watching close enough you just might catch these one-of-a-kind props in films you wouldn’t expect them to be in.

You never know. You just never know. I wonder if back in 1930, Universal Studios make up artist, Jack Pierce while constructing his “monster” make-up on actor Boris Karloff, had wondered if he was creating something transcendent. Something that would forever infuse itself into the western culture generation after generation, becoming the mental image that every brain would access when it heard the name “Frankenstein.” I bet he didn’t. I bet ol’ Jack had an assignment, did the best job that he could, collected his meager paycheck and was grateful to be working during the depression. Truly, that is the way it is. You never can tell what will connect with audiences. You just do the work, collect your salary, and thank God you are not pounding the pavement looking for your next job. Evil Dead II is one of those cult favorite films that so much of has been discussed and revealed through interviews, articles, supplemental videos on DVD’s, convention panels, etc., that I’m not sure what I can add to all of this information besides my individual view point. Forgive me if you’ve heard much of this information before; just know that what you are now reading is not being pushed through the filter of a reporter. I was there in Mark Shostrom’s South Pasadena studio. And although, again, I didn’t go to location in North Carolina, what I designed and sculpted at Mark’s would follow me to this day.
