Earthquake

Hold on to your hats, kids, this is not a remake of the 1974 Charlton Heston-starrer. No need to froth at the mouth just yet. Deadline Hollywood reports that Universal and J.J. Abrams‘ long-rumored Earthquake has finally gotten off the ground after being set up back in 2008. That incarnation of the film had David Seltzer set to pen it, but Universal and Abrams’ Bad Robot Productions have now hired Oscar-winning screenwriter Dustin Lance Black for the gig. It’s an interesting job for Black, who is best known for writing both Milk and J. Edgar – perhaps we’re in for a historical earth-shaking flick? Black has, however, been busy as of late with some different projects that also signal his desire to branch out. He adapted Jon Krakauer’s “Under the Banner of Heaven” for Ron Howard to direct, he penned Barefoot Bandit about real-life criminal Colton Harris-Moore for Fox, and he’s currently working on an adaptation of the Dark Horse graphic novel “3 Story” for his next outing as directing. Every week he delves into his personal and professional history to tell the story of how he became a monster that makes monsters. So there I was, in a small conference room in Woodland Hills, California on a warm February afternoon in 2009. I knew that the meeting would go long, and I would have to spend at least an hour driving home to Los Angeles. Sitting next to me was Mark Dippe, Industrial Light and Magic alumnus and director of the movie Spawn, and across from me sat Dean Cundey, the guy that not only shot all of John Carpenter’s early movies, but also shot Jurassic Park and Back to the Future just to name a few. At the end of the table was producer Tom Kiniston; I had worked with Tom on the Tremors TV series, and next to him was Brian Gilbert, formerly of Stan Winston Productions. The director was Brian Levant, whom I had never worked with personally. However I was familiar with him because I was representing KNB EFX Group, and KNB had made the Turbo-Man Suits for Jingle All The Way, a Mr. Levant effort. James Cameron is always on the brink of revolution. Really, the dude needs to take a breather. At this year’s CinemaCon, the tech-centric director couldn’t shut up about 3D, faster frame rates and improved camera systems while everyone around him was salivating for a detail or two on his plans for the Avatar sequels. Forget that — there are shutter speeds to be discussed! We’re all about Peter Jackson hyping The Hobbit shooting 48 fps on RED digital 3D and legendary effects guru Douglas Trumbull heading back to directing with a tech-first approach, but at some point, isn’t the equipment standing in the way of great storytelling? We’ll give the benefit of the doubt to these three men, but whether any of their advancements are really “the future of movies,” won’t be known for a few years. Unfortunately, just because you’re brilliant and you say something is awesome…doesn’t mean it’s awesome. Here’s a look back at some of the other “game-changing” inventions that were supposed to change the way we watch movies, but never really picked up steam.

We all love seeing the Earth blow up in movies, even if it rarely happens. We’re in this fight together, and if we all pitch in just a little bit, we’ll be able to witness the complete death of our Earth many times during our lifetime.
