The Oscar-winning filmmaker is another big get for the company’s venture into original programming.
Apple continues to prove to have some serious staying power in the entertainment industry with its newest acquisition. Variety reports that Damien Chazelle is next in line to join the tech giant’s growing slate of scripted series.
Details about the series are still sparse — it doesn’t even have a title yet — but Chazelle will write and direct every episode. He will also executive produce alongside Jordan Horowitz and Fred Berger, both of whom were notably involved in Chazelle’s hit musical La La Land. The movie scored Chazelle a Best Director Oscar last year.
Despite Apple keeping almost every bit of information about their Chazelle project close to the chest, perhaps some expectations could be gleaned from what we do know. Could the Apple series mark another musical given the reunion of Chazelle, Horowitz and Berger and the fact that so much of Chazelle’s work is actually musically oriented? Or will Chazelle branch out from what we’re expecting of him, like he has with his upcoming feature, First Man?
This will be Chazelle’s second scripted series. He is slated to produce and direct episodes of the musical drama The Eddy as part of a deal with Netflix. His commitment to The Eddy won’t be as extensive as that of his Apple series, though, as he’s only in charge of crafting two episodes there.
In teaming up with Apple, Chazelle will be joining a line-up that already features some of the best in the business. Apple has no shortage of great actors, producers, and directors on its list of much-anticipated programming. Kristen Wiig will be starring in Apple’s first half-hour comedy series (which will be produced by Reese Witherspoon).
Witherspoon herself has been busy setting up a ton of projects with Apple. She will produce an untitled morning show drama starring Jennifer Aniston as well as develop a show starring Octavia Spencer titled Are You Sleeping. The reboot of Steven Spielberg’s anthology series, Amazing Stories, is also happening as a joint effort between Amblin Partners, Apple, and Universal TV.
