Cowboys and Aliens

“So anything you’re seeing is really spoiler stuff here, right?” That’s how Jon Favreau greets us as he takes refuge inside a pop up tent that is struggling to keep the New Mexican heat and dust out. He’s a force as he enters, a commanding man whose voice is a mix of sarcasm and sweet. Still, he’s about as unimposing as a man over six feet tall can be, and with his breathable pants and bandana he seems more likely to be taking a group of scouts camping than directing a science fiction western starring Daniel Craig. Plus, he’s right about the spoilers. Cowboys & Aliens doesn’t hit theaters until July of 2011, but FSR was invited to the set in the middle of August to watch the crew film a scene and to see who could avoid heat exhaustion the longest (it was Harrison Ford). We won’t be revealing any spoilers from the film, but we will be spending the entire week exploring what the set was like, discovering the movies that inspired the shoot, and talking with Favreau, co-writer Bob Orci, and the cast. Plus, hot off the old dusty trail, we’ve got two behind-the-scenes pictures to share with you after we take you into the canyon where the film was made.

The Week That Was

Welcome to another scorching edition of The Week That Was. As you may have gleaned from our articles about terrible honeymoon spots and our lack of posting any weekend articles (including this day-late entry into our weekly recap series), a few of us went out into the wilderness to watch Cole Abaius tie the knot. It was adorable, he and his bride will surely be happy and she even agreed to watch movies with him (even the scary ones). We drank, we went skeet shooting, we drank some more and in the end, we had a wonderful time helping the man who has often been referred to as “the glue that holds FSR together” off into the world of marriage. That said, even though Dr. Abaius was off work this week in preparation for the big day, we did have all kinds of things buzzing on the ole site this past week. Here’s a quick round-up.

By the end of 2010, fans will see Olivia Wilde on House, in theaters for The Next Three Days and Tron: Legacy, and will hear more about her role in Cowboys and Aliens. She’s going to be everywhere, and that’s not even counting television appearances, magazine photo shoots, and co-starring roles in dreams. Now, she’ll appear alongside Jason Bateman and Ryan Reynolds for The Change Up – a film that sees uptight Bateman switch bodies with slacker Reynolds for the record-breaking 2,000th body changing movie. The best possible outcome? A twist ending where Batemen finds himself permanently stuck inside Jodie Foster’s body.

Comic-Con 2010

Last weekend was the crucible of Comic-Con, and no fewer than one billion trillion news stories came out of the convention aimed directly at your sensibilities as an audience member. We weren’t the only site on the block that had coverage of course, and hopefully you read more than a few of our peers (because there really are some great sites out there). You were most likely inundated with new information about the movies hitting theaters soon or in the next year. Did any of it change your mind? Was there a movie you were dying to see that you cooled on? Was there a movie that landed on your radar for the first time? Is your confidence renewed in anything?

It’s been a busy night for the ladies of Mad Men. First the lovely Alison Brie joins Scream 4, and now Abigail Spencer — best known as Don Drapers fiery school teacher mistress — is joining the Jon Favreau directed actioner Cowboys and Aliens. This will mark her studio feature debut, as she joins Daniel Craig, Olivia Wilde, Harrison Ford and Sam Rockwell. Seriously — how ’bout that cast?

Some will find this interesting. I don’t. Not really. But like any journalist worth his salt (still something questioned hourly in my case), I am here to give the people what they want.

Harrison Ford

It’s been a while since Harrison Ford has been a part of a truly entertaining movie… over a decade in fact. But if recent rumors and Twitter confirmations are true, Ford may just be appearing in one of the more fun-sounding films scheduled for release in 2011.

Could the team that brought up Star Trek be partnering with the team that brought us Iron Man? Downey Jr is already on board and Favreau might just be signing on the dotted line soon enough for aliens in the Old West.

Judging by their output for Star Trek, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, and The Proposal all in one summer, it seems like screenwriters Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman don’t sleep. And they won’t get to anytime soon. We caught them not napping in order to ask them about writing for Michael Bay and their upcoming Cowboys and Aliens.
