‘American History X’ Director Gets Massive Cast for ‘Detached’

In what sounds a bit like Chalk meets Dangerous Minds meets Half Nelson, newcomer Carl Lund’s script for Detached has an absurd amount of acting talent currently stapled to its cover sheet.

“Mad Men” firecracker Christina Hendricks, Lucy Liu and William Peterson (who some remember from “C.S.I.” but no one seems to remember from Young Guns 2) have signed onto a cast that already includes Adrien Brody, James Caan, Blythe Danner, Marcia Gay Harden, Bryan Cranston, and Tim Blake Nelson.

Doug E. Doug is also involved – in case you had any doubts left.

The story seems fairly basic – a substitute teacher finally gets involved in the welfare of his students after taking a particular interest in one who is making ends meet as a prostitute. Brody plays the substitute, Peterson plays a Vietnam vet/history teacher, Hendricks may be the romantic lead, Liu plays a frustrated school psychologist, and I have to assume that Doug E. Doug plays the prostitute because, hey, why not?

As if this set up and cast weren’t enough, the film is being directed by Tony Kaye, who hasn’t delivered much of anything since American History X, but delivered American History X.

Should be a fun, massively depressing ride.

Curb stomp.
