When the 82nd Annual Academy Award nominations were announced earlier this year, the average fan of animated film was forced into a double-take. There was the Pixar movie, Up. There was the beautifully animated and dark Coraline, from director Henry Selick. There was even a Disney movie, The Princess and the Frog, and Wes Anderson’s surprise delight Fantastic Mr. Fox. But then there was one more: The Secret of Kells, from directors Tomm Moore and Nora Twomey. It also comes from producers Didier Brunner and Viviane Vanfleteren, the French tandem that co-produced the twice Oscar nominated animated feature The Triplets of Bellville in 2003.

With Kells, they’ve assembled a wonderful team of international animators from Ireland, Belgium and France to create one of the most vibrant and colorful animated films of the year. Having had a chance to see it yesterday, I can say with certainty that there’s a reason this beautifully detailed, fantastic feature was recognized by the Academy. Look for Dr. Cole Abaius’ full review later in the week, as we continue to uncover the many layers of this masterful work. Until then though, I do have a great set of assets for this film, and would like to take a few moments to introduce you to the world of Kells. Below you will find the film’s official synopsis as well as a beautiful set of photos. On the next page, you will find the Secret of Kells trailer as well as four great clips from the film. It is the most in-depth look at this movie that you will find on the web. Check it out and enjoy.

Synopsis:

Magic, fantasy, and Celtic mythology come together in a riot of color and detail that dazzle the eyes, in this sweeping story about the power of imagination and faith to carry humanity through dark times. Young Brendan lives in the Abbey of Kells, a remote medieval outpost under siege from raiding barbarians. One day a celebrated master illuminator arrives from foreign lands carrying an ancient but unfinished book, brimming with secret wisdom and powers. To help complete the magical book, Brendan has to overcome his deepest fears on a dangerous quest that takes him into the enchanted forest, where mythical creatures hide. It is here that he meets the fairy Aisling, a mysterious young wolf-girl, who helps him along the way. But with the barbarians closing in, will Brendan’s determination and artistic vision illuminate the darkness and show that enlightenment is the best fortification against evil? Secret of Kells is a France/Belgium/Ireland co-production of Les Armateurs, Vivi Film, Cartoon Saloon and France 2 Cinema and features the voices of Brendan Gleeson (Harry Potter, In Bruges), Evan McGuire and Christen Mooney.
