Steve Carell is Taking ‘Crazy, Stupid, Love.’ Directors Glenn Ficarra and John Requa on a Buddy Backpacking Adventure Through Europe

Glenn Ficarra and John Requa are starting to become known as quite the filmmaking duo. Already they’ve worked together on cult hit Bad Santa, indie darling I Love You Phillip Morris, and mainstream romantic comedy Crazy, Stupid, Love. And it looks like they’re just getting started. For a couple of guys who have worked in such a wide array of genres already, what comes next? Not sequels to films they’ve already made, according to an interview they recently did with Movie Hole.

When asked about the possibility of Bad Santa 2, they confirmed that it was happening and said that they were asked to direct but turned down the offer. When asked about a sequel to Crazy, Stupid, Love. they said that they left the characters where they wanted them to be and that if any sort of sequel happened it wouldn’t be for another twenty years or so. Ficarra and Requa don’t seem to be very into making sequels. The more I learn about these guys the more I like them. So what are they working on? Apparently they’ve written a script based on an idea from Crazy, Stupid, Love. star Steve Carell.

According to Requa, “We’re working on something with Steve also, that he’s producing. He’s not starring but it’s based on the idea he had. We wrote the script already. It’s one of these three friends from college, but now they’re in their 40s, movies. They’re going on a European backpacking trip that that they never did. And it’s filled with all this middle-aged fun.”

Okay, so let’s just start selling it as a cross between Old School and European Vacation, two comedy classics no matter where you’re sitting. The success of this film will largely come down to, of course, which comedic actors they get to play those three friends, but the concept seems strong enough to me; especially when given these guys’ ability to blend comedic and dramatic material seamlessly. With each film they put out I’m learning to have more trust in the Ficarra/Requa duo, so I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt until I hear word of something like I Love You Phillip Morris 2.
