Marvel Studios announced today that Stanley Tucci, the Oscar-nominated actor most recently seen in Peter Jackson’s The Lovely Bones, has been cast in the Joe Johnston directed Captain America: The First Avenger. He will play Dr. Abraham Erskine, a German scientist who in many of the early comics was behind Project Rebirth, the secret experiment that created the Super Soldier known as Captain America.
The plot of Captain America will focus on the early days of the Marvel Universe, in and around World War II. It will follow Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) as he volunteers for the experimental program that employs a super serum that gives him incredible strength and agility. The film is set to begin production in the next few months, and will also star Sebastian Stan, Hugo Weaving, and Hayley Atwell.
As for Tucci, there’s no reason to be anything but optimistic about him joining the cast. He’s a fine actor and adding him to the roster only confirms Marvel’s commitment to putting quality talent in its films, so as to tell quality stories and deliver an experience worthy of the legacies that surround these characters.
