I don’t know how to make this story not sound at least a little dirty, despite the fact that it’s all about a damn kids movie. Empire has revealed today the Shaun of the Dead and Star Trek star Simon Pegg has joined the voice cast of Ice Age 3: Dawn of the Dinosaurs. Pegg will voice a character named Buck, a “larger than life, swashbuckling, one-eyed weasel”. Buck will help Manny the Mammoth (Ray Romano), Sid the sloth (John Leguizamo) and Diego the sabretooth tiger (Dennis Leary) when they fall into the world beneath the ice, where dinosaurs run wild. And according to Empire’s report, Buck has a Captain Ahab-like obsession with a Baryonyx dinosaur named Rudy, who is the reason that he only has one eye. Sounds like a cool character, if you ask me. Sort of like Puss in Boots from Shrek, but darker.

I’m not sure how all of you feel about the Ice Age franchise, but I’ve always been a fan. It’s some of the most interesting animation work that we’ve seen from any studio outside of the two-horse race that is Pixar and Dreamworks Animation. I’m sure it has something to do with my undying devotion to Scrat, the resourceful and scrappy prehistoric whatchamacalit that is just trying to get a nut, but I also find the characters to be relatively engaging and the animation is sharp. See how I did that — took it to a dirty place. I can’t write about kids movies any more.

Ice Age 3: Dawn of the Dinosaurs hits theaters on July 1, 2009.
