Scream 4 might not be on the top of the list of anticipated horror sequels for true fans, but that won’t stop it from happening. And if we’re going to have a fourth Scream film, there are a few elements that will be expected. One has already been fulfilled, with director Wes Craven and screenwriter Kevin Williamson returning to the franchise. Another — and perhaps the most important thing — is that there must be a steady stream of attractive, recognizable young actresses who systematically meet their ends. That’s where today’s casting news comes in.

Heat Vision is repoting that Lake Bell (Boston Legal, It’s Complicated) is in negotiations to join the film, while Twilight star Ashley Greene and Heroes cheerleader Hayden Panettiere have also received offers. They would join returning stars Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox Arquette and David Arquette. If the deals go through, Greene would play Campbell’s cousin Jill, with Panettiere playing her best friend, a nerdy film geek. No word yet on what role Lake Bell may be taking.

Aside from the continued grabbing of Panettiere to maintain her status as geek-bait (“nerdy film geek,” really?), this casting news is solid. In so much as I would watch all of these fine young ladies get stabbed to death by a man in a mask.

Shooting is scheduled to begin in July in Michigan. Scream 4 is due in theaters April 15, 2011.
