In theaters this weekend is Martin McDonagh’s Seven Psychopaths, best known to us as that one movie with all of those crazy-fun actors we’ve always wanted to see brought together on-screen. It’s got a solid helping of Colin Farrell, a strong dash of Christopher Walken and Sam Rockwell, a pinch of Woody Harrelson and just enough Tom Waits to make it interesting. Not to be overlooked are co-stars Abbie Cornish and Olga Kurylenko, neither of which have any problem standing toe-to-toe with their funnymen costars.
Still, star power isn’t what it used to be and there’s a Liam Neeson movie in theaters, so the folks at CBS Films have had to get creative to bring Seven Psychopaths into the conversation for a wider audience. In doing so, they’ve crafted a compelling social media campaign, as evidence by their brightly colored Facebook Page and gone above and beyond with art for the film, showing the prevalence of alternate art and its potential usefulness for studio film. But before we get to the art, we’ve got a nice little exclusive from the studio — another new marketing trend that works well for such a film — a remixed trailer.

The Alternate Art of Seven Psychopaths
We talk about Mondo all the time, probably a little too much for the sake of our own pocketbooks. It’s all part of something that many a staffer around the FSR office has in common: the love for alternate art. Screen-printed concert posters, movie prints and works of art from some of the best independent artists working today. We do it not just for the movie, but because the art is great. In the case of Seven Psychopaths, CBS Films commissioned six artists to create prints, each providing a look into the world of one of the film’s many wild personalities. From a Christopher Walken print from Phantom City Creative (a personal favorite of yours truly) to Todd Slater’s rendition of Tom Waits and his rabbit, it’s another example of the right project meeting the right film. Something one would hope is picked up on by other studios wishing to capture the attention (and the almighty dollar) of the attention-depleted internet generation.
But that’s perhaps a much larger discussion for another day. For the moment, lets take a look at this art:
Walken by Justin Erickson (http://phantomcitycreative.com)
As creative director and co-founder, Justin is responsible for all aspects of concept and design at Phantom City Creative. Justin graduated from Sheridan College’s prestigious Interpretive Illustration program in 2004. Working first as a freelance illustrator and graphic designer, Justin gained valuable experience in the industry which landed him a job at Rue Morgue Magazine as graphic designer creating gruesome graphics in 2007. It was at Rue Morgue that Justin’s love and interest in entertainment design flourished inspiring him to co-found Phantom City Creative in 2010. In addition to Phantom City and Rue Morgue, Justin works as a freelance illustration/graphic designer, puts together art shows and has been featured in numerous publication across the globe.

Originally from New England, Dave currently works, creates & lives in Portland Oregon. He grew up skateboarding and snowboarding and pursued graphic design with the intention of making graphics in similar realms that evoke fun. His work right now has a focus on graphic “radness,” illustration, typography & art direction but is not limited to only these avenues. His goal with every client is to implement concept with sophistication & a sense of playfulness.

Dan Kuhlken and Nathan Goldman were both drawn to music and design at an early age, but didn’t combine their talents until 2005 when the duo founded a design studio with the goal of fusing these two creative avenues. The pair has found a niche in linking a personal and unique aesthetic to the world’s most talented musical artists. With dynamically different skill sets ranging from fine art to film production, Dan and Nathan bring diverse talents and artistic perspectives to every project. Based in the UK, Chris’ work has appeared in exhibition across the globe in both solo and group shows. His work has been featured in publications such as The New York Times, The Washington Post, Semi Permanent Book, MacUser, Computer Arts and Digital Arts. He has won numerous awards including the Lancashire award for creativity, Adobe creativity award – character design, AOI Images 33 – Silver award and 3×3 – Distinguished Merit.
Rockwell by Eric Nyffeler (www.doe-eyed.com)
Based out of America’s fabled Heartland (more specifically, Lincoln, Neb.), Eric Nyffeler’s illustration style mixes gritty geometrics with hand-drawn elements to create a sometimes whimsical, sometimes abject style that is helping to redefine the visual aesthetic of the Midwest. While his preferred medium is the screen-printed gigposter, he’s as comfortable branding a restaurant chain as he is designing and printing a poster for a local gutter punk band. Doe Eyed’s work has charmed the editors of publications such as Print, HOW and IdN, and has been featured in books such as Gigposters: Volume 2, Playful Type 2, Damn Good and 1000 Indie Rock Posters.
Waits by Todd Slater (www.toddslater.net)
Operating out of a converted garage studio on the outskirts of Austin, Texas, Todd Slater is as prolific as he is piercingly inventive. In less than a decade since graduating from art school, he has created hundreds of dazzling posters featuring the music industry’s hottest acts, including The White Stripes, The Foo Fighters, Radiohead and The Killers. He draws inspiration directly from the artist’s music, translating the sounds into gut instincts or vibes that drive color selection and design schemes.
