‘Reader’ Director Stephen Daldry Up for Twilight: Breaking Dawn

Stephen Daldry

The rumor mill around the fourth Twilight movie, Breaking Dawn, keeps spinning with each passing day. And like the film’s main character, Edward (Robert Pattison), the damn thing just won’t die — no matter how much we wish it would. Until Summit Entertainment picks a director, their “wish list” will be the source of great speculation.

Today’s rumor comes from 24 Frames over that The LA Times. There, Steven Zeitchik is reporting that The Reader director Stephen Daldry has been added to the studio’s wish list to direct the fourth film in the still-booming tween romance franchise. He joins the ranks of Sofia Coppola, Bill Condon and Gus Van Sant, all of whom have reportedly been approached by Summit for the fourth film. And like all of the others, there’s no indication that Daldry has any interest in taking on such a task, but it is notable that Summit has reached out to gauge interest.

As Zeitchik points out, the fourth book is filled with the most complicated subject matter and may require a steadier hand than has been previously seen with the Twilight franchise. That is of course, if Eclipse director David Slade isn’t interested in returning. My money is still on Slade turning in a Twilight film that is heads above the rest, simply based on his previous work with Hard Candy and 30 Days of Night. It goes without saying that he’s at his best when his material is edgier. Daldry has also done well with more provocative subject material, though I doubt there will be any lengthy scenes with a nude Kristen Stewart in a bath tub with any of her male co-stars. Have to keep that rating down to at least a PG-13, else you eliminate much of the franchise’s core audience.

While this report doesn’t tell us anything about who will direct Breaking Dawn, it does reinforce the fact that Summit is looking to go very high-end for the director of it’s fourth installment. Whether its a smart play or a useless ploy that will falter based on subpar source material is yet to be seen. At least they’re trying.

What would you think of Stephen Daldry taking on the fourth Twilight film?
