Yesterday we reported that Oscar-nominated actress Penelope Cruz (Nine) was joining Lars von Trier’s next film, Planet Melancholia. As it turns out, that report might have been wrong. Kudos to our friends at /Film for digging up more dirt on that story, as they found and translated a few quotes from von Trier and company saying that the Cruz news was no good.
Now free to move along, Penelope has hopped over to the production of Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides with her Nine director Rob Marshall. Heat Vision is reporting that she’s in negotiations to join Johnny Depp in the fourth film, which will revolve around the Fountain of Youth. Early reports say that she will play an adversary to Captain Jack Sparrow, but one that has — as you might expect — a unique effect on the wobbly-walking pirate. She certainly has the fire for such a role. And as we’ve learned in previous Pirates films, quality talent makes it all the more fun.
On Stranger Tides is gearing up to shoot this summer in Hawaii, and should be ready for a May 20, 2011 release.
