The long awaited and much debated film adaptation of the classic fighting game Tekken finally has a trailer. And it looks… exactly like you’d expect a movie based on a video game about a fighting tournament to look.
The Tekken games are a Sony-exclusive series that follows a fighting tournament called The King of Iron Fist. (Personally, I’m more of a Star Gladiator fan, but I still remember clocking countless hours playing Tekken 2 on my Playstation.) There are six official games in the series so far along with a handful of offshoots and remixes. Unlike the recent (and awesomely hilarious) Street Fighter: Legend of Chun-Li, the Tekken movie looks to be a more literal translation and will be focusing almost exclusively on the in-tournament fighting. With a little bit of parkour of course. Check out the trailer for Tekken courtesy of Play.com…
Yup. That’s a movie based on a video game alright.
The movie is directed by Dwight Little who you may remember as the helmer of the Wesley Snipes classic Murder at 1600 as well as Steven Seagal’s Rastafarian action thriller Marked for Death. More recently he’s been busy working in the TV realm directing episodes for very cool shows like Dollhouse, Castle, and 24. The cast is a who’s who of who? But one name among them certainly peaks my interest, and that’s Chiaki Kuriyama. You may remember her as the ball and chain-wielding schoolgirl from Kill Bill, but she stole my heart as the cold, calculated, misunderstood schoolgirl in Battle Royale. Mmm, time to re-watch that one me thinks.
Thanks to Twitch for the heads up.
What do you think of the trailer? Are you looking forward to the movie? Where’s my goddamn Star Gladiator movie?!?
