If there was one film missing from our 2013 film guide, I’d say it was Jeff Nichols‘ Mud. Although he only has two films under his belt, Shotgun Stories and Take Shelter, Nichols has quickly risen to prominence as an A-list art house director. With Mud, the filmmaker finally has his chance to move into the mainstream, and this first trailer for the film does a decent job of pushing it as something easily digestible.
Hopefully Mud has more to it than this trailer lets on and, knowing Nichols and his body of work, that will most likely be the case. With the cast he’s got, including Matthew McConaughey continuing his hot streak, he’d have to go out of his way to screw this up. In the next few days we’ll have a review for the film from Sundance to tell you if Mud is more than your average “on the run” thriller.
