Lady Gaga

There are more than a few very iconic things about the movies of the James Bond franchise. One is the men who have played the role of the British superspy. Another is the women who are usually part of his temporary undoing. And finally, there are the theme songs. The likes of Paul McCartney, Gladys Knight, Tom Jones and Louis Armstrong, among others, have helped that. Not to mention contemporary players like Garbage, Madonna, Chris Cornell and the most recent tandem of Alicia Keys and Jack White. No matter who sings it, they are recognizable. And no matter how unusual the song is — as was the case with the Quantum of Solace theme — it usually fits well in the opening credits.

The question going into a Bond film, especially one where we already know who will play the lead, is who will sing the theme song. According to a report at Stuff.co.nz, the next name we’ll be adding to that list might be Lady Gaga. The report states that studio executives at MGM — who seem to be steadily moving on the film as their company goes through a major financial upheaval — have asked her to write and record a song in the next few weeks. Lady Gaga is an obvious choice, as her worldwide appeal is at an all-time high. And she’s got some talent, I’ll give her that. No matter what, it can’t be any worse than the Quantum of Solace song — that was downright awful.

This news all seems a bit premature, considering the current bidding war surrounding MGM. Though they have been moving slowly, but surely toward starting on Bond 23. Sam Mendes is mostly in place to direct, Bond girl rumors are swirling and leaks about potential story (from the Peter Morgan script) and villains seem to be flowing. If there was a right time to begin seeing rumors about a theme song, this might be it. However, we don’t have any indication that production will begin anytime soon. You can trust that we’re digging, though… I don’t think there’s anyone who doesn’t want to see this next Bond film get made.

What do you think about the potential theme song being sung by Lady Gaga?
