Henry Selick

How could the already stellar Pixar creative team get any better? Glad you asked: according to Variety, stop-motion master Henry Selick (Coraline, Nightmare Before Christmas) has signed an exclusive long term deal with Disney/Pixar. Selick will still work with stop motion animation but will now develop films with the Pixar team. This is great news for all parties involved. For Selick he gets the opportunity to bounce ideas off one of the best story and technical teams in the business. And Disney/Pixar gets yet another amazing storyteller in their ranks.

The article doesn’t mention what exactly is up next for Selick but does mention that he will develop both original and literary properties within the Pixar studio. Selick has had a very mixed history with Disney. You may recall that he became a superstar of stop motion with Nightmare Before Christmas but then swiftly got the mouse shaped boot after James and the Giant Peach underperformed (and took the air out of stop motion animation for many years).

Thankfully, stop motion animation has really made a strong comeback as of late with Coraline and Fantastic Mr. Fox leading the way and this is a huge sign of confidence in the technique. It will be really exciting to see what comes of this collaboration.
