Adaptations of the Cassandra Clare-penned books best known as ‘The Mortal Instruments Series” have been in the works for a while. The first substantial bit of news about them was that Lily Collins would be playing the protagonist, Clary Fray, and then came word that Jamie Campbell Bower would be playing the smoldering bad boy character of the books, Jace Wayland. But that was a long time ago, and we haven’t heard much since.

Fear not, these movies are still getting made, and we should be hearing a lot more about them from this point on, because they’ve finally just announced a director. According to Deadline Alacante, the director of the Karate Kid remake, Harald Zwart, is on board to make the first film in the series. The press release they cite also confirms the ages-old casting of Collins, so fans of the series don’t need to start all over again picturing a new Clary in their heads.

But what about Campbell Bower, whose name got left out of this announcement? A quick Googling of his name in conjunction with the film title leads to an About.com article that in turn leads to Cassandra Clare’s blog, where she had this to say about the issue: “Jamie’s not mentioned in the article, but he’s still attached to the project — it’s just an article about Lily and Harald, and now that all the i’s and t’s are crossed and dotted with Lily they’re probably doing the same with Jamie in terms of blocking his time. My speculation there, though.” That’s a lot of Internet navigation just to find out the fate of an actor I’m not really familiar with. Time for a nap.

For those of you who are still awake and not yet familiar with Clare’s books, “City of Bones,” “City of Ashes,” and “City of Glass,” you should check them out. They’re fun in a less clever Buffy the Vampire Slayer way. Just look at what a craze The Hunger Games is becoming – it’s important to be in on the ground floor of these things.
