Nikki Finke heard today that Universal and Dark Horse have agreed to a 3 year deal that would grant said uber-production company the exclusive movie rights to any Dark House characters in existence now, and also to ones that may be created in the future.

The big dogs over at Universal had these kind words for Dark Horse: Their unique connection to youth culture is proven, and we are thrilled to be part of their expanding film production work.

Now Nikki didn’t seem thrilled and the Universal guys are clearly not going to say anything bad about Dark Horse, but as a long time comic reader I can tell you that this is good news to me. Dark Horse often gets shafted in terms of recognition, but they put out an ecclectic mix of old favorites (Star Wars, Gremlins), current hot topics (Hellboy), and some really cool underexposed stuff (Steve Niles’ Criminal Macabre).

So what can we expect out of this deal? Definitely more Hellboy and possible spinoffs focusing on B.P.R.D. (Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense) or Abe Sapien, both of which are already comics. I’m going on record right now saying that if I don’t get a The Goon movie I will be very upset! Moving on, new to the Dark Horse line-up is a cool looking Accident Man and staple Criminal Macabre is an odds on favorite,as it is in development with Tom Jane as Cal McDonald. Dark Horse also churns out fan favorite Oh My Goddess and they even have a comic about dinosaurs entitled Age of Reptiles. There is a huge stockpile of characters and storylines, (Madman, anyone?) just waiting to be developed. And with this deal, I’m sure we’ll see several of these books come to life on the big screen. Here’s hoping they do it right. It’s also worth noting that while Dark Horse publishes tons of comics, they do not own the exclusive rights to turn some of them into movies, but with Universal backing their play, it may be possible to bring some of these adaptations to theaters soon, in addition to their original comic characters.
