What is Casting Couch? Your daily dose of casting news. Today we’ve, of course, got the latest name to be confirmed for the Veronica Mars movie, as well as some info about the casting process for Star Wars: Episode VII.
They’ve been talking about putting together a sequel to Dumb and Dumber for quite some time now. The project has seen its share of ups and downs, however, and many people have probably started to think that it’s just one of those things that’s never going to happen. A new report from Deadline claims that those fears are unfounded though. They’re reporting that Dumb and Dumber To has just landed in the lap of Universal, and not only are Peter and Bobby Farrelly on board to direct and do a re-write of the current script, but both Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels are on board to reprise their roles of Harry and Lloyd, as well. And more than that even, this is said to be a movie that’s been put on the fast track, so it should see scheduling starting soon. That all sounds pretty official, right?
Given all of the success Anna Kendrick saw from showing off her singing chops in Pitch Perfect, it was probably only a matter of time before someone else cast her in something musical. Well, the time for more singing is now, because today a press release has gone out [via Coming Soon] announcing that Kendrick will co-star alongside Smash’s Jeremy Jordan in a big screen adaptation of Jason Robert Brown’s musical The Last 5 Years. Kendrick will be playing an actress and Jordan a novelist, and the basic story the musical tells is their five year relationship, from the time they grow together to the time they grow apart. But with singing.
Prom star and overall dreamboat, Thomas McDonell, has just signed on to take the lead role in a new movie. According to Variety he’s all set to star in I’m Obsesssed With You, which is an adaptation of a Genevieve Adams play that’s being put together by director Jon Goracy. It tells the story of a foursome who are in a college improv group together as they approach graduation and look toward their futures. Presumably it’s over the course of the dramatic events of these few days when they finally learn to say “Yes, and,” to life.
An animated movie called The Prophet has just put together a nice little voice cast. This one is an adaptation of the famous Khalil Gibran book, and it’s being put together by The Lion King director Roger Allers, along with the help of producer Salma Hayek, who this is apparently something of a passion project for. So much so that, in addition to producing, she’s also going to lay down some audio alongside fellow cast members Liam Neeson, John Krasinski, Frank Langella, Alfred Molina, and Quvenzhané Wallis. Today’s Veronica Mars movie news is some of the most exciting yet. The latest casting confirmation comes from New Girl star Max Greenfield, who’s going to be returning to the world of Neptune, California in order to reprise his role of the sheepish and slightly bumbling Deputy Leo D’Amato. Deputy Leo wasn’t that big of a deal when the show was around, seeing as he was just a brief love interest for Veronica in the first season, but now that New Girl has let us all in on the secret of how hilarious Greenfield is, most likely Rob Thomas will be coming up with something great for him to do. A Google Hangout wherein Greenfield confirms his return can be found here. Note: Go to around minute 13 to skip New Girl talk.
Not Pictured: Fit Male
Finally, let’s wrap things up by talking a bit about the casting process that’s ongoing for JJ Abrams’ upcoming Star Wars: Episode VII. No, we don’t yet have any names confirmed to play new characters in the film, but a casting sheet that’s going around paints a pretty vivid picture of what sort of roles are up for grabs. Apparently the main characters in this new Star Wars are going to include, “a late twenty-something male, fit, handsome and confident,” as well as a “young twenty-something male, witty and smart, fit but not traditionally good looking,” among many others. A whole list of the characters can be found over at Bleeding Cool, if you’re a Star Wars fanatic and are jonesing for info.
