What is Casting Couch? A compilation of casting news that touches on the Veronica Mars movie, Clint Eastwood’s plans for the Jersey Boys movie, and other things you may or may not find interesting. It all depends on how into casting news you are, really.
Due to his work in The Hangover and The Office, we’re mostly used to seeing Ed Helms being funny and whatnot. But Joe Carnahan seems to think he’s got some dramatic chops, because word from Heat Vision is that Helms is in negotiations to join his upcoming thriller, Stretch. The movie is set to star Patrick Wilson as a gambling-addicted limo driver who’s trying to get his life back on track and Chris Pine as his current customer, who’s a sleazy criminal and is described as being “the passenger from hell.” If he signs, Helms will be playing another dude who drives limos, a nicer one, who serves as the Wilson character’s conscience.
Owen Wilson is another comedian type who’s also a strong enough actor to do dramatic work, but for his new job it looks like he’s going to be sticking to the funny side of things. Deadline is reporting that he’s joining the now-untitled heist comedy that Jim Carrey is doing with Napoleon Dynamite helmer Jared Hess. The film is said to be about an armored car driver who gets convinced to take part in a bank job, but who then gets double crossed by his crew and ends up on the run while all of his former buddies laugh it up as they live in the lap of luxury. On second thought, that doesn’t sound funny at all.
On to the day’s Veronica Mars news. While one would imagine most of the series regulars are going to be back for Rob Thomas’ upcoming movie revival of his teenage detective television show, standard protocol says that we need to have an official announcement for each one regardless, so today Thomas and Francis Capra took to Youtube to announce that Capra will officially be appearing in the film and reprising his role of the surprisingly cuddly biker gang leader, Eli ‘Weevil’ Navarro.
Less obvious on the Veronica Mars front is that Christine Lakin is also said to be joining the film in order to reprise her role of Susan Knight. This is less obvious because Lakin’s character only appeared in a couple scenes of one episode of the Veronica Mars TV show, all the way back in Season 1, so probably you don’t remember her even existing in the first place. Lakin herself you do remember though, because she played Al on Step by Step. You know, the sister who was supposed to be the tomboy, but it was confusing because the show only got like one season in before she grew up and became way hotter than the older sisters, who the show still kept telling us were supposed to be the hot ones? Have you ever known someone who was getting married, but who was so socially inept that he didn’t have any friends who could serve as his best man during the ceremony? Me either, because that’s not a thing that exists. But Hollywood seems to think it’s a concept that resonates with people for some reason, so we’re now going to get a second comedy that uses it as its main conceit. This time around the movie isn’t about a groom looking for a best man like I Love You, Man was though, it’s about a guy who runs a service wherein he acts as the best man for a series of clients who all have somehow landed wives but are incapable of forming platonic friendships. The film doesn’t have a title yet, but it is going to star Kevin Hart, so expect it to make a bajillion dollars. [Screen Daily]
You remember Hollywood actor Thomas Jane, right? He was in that one movie where he played a homeless guy. Anyway, Screen Daily is reporting that he’s now going to be in another movie, this one called Hard Drive. Though it may sound like a techno-thriller, Hard Drive is actually the latest action project to capitalize on that strange, current trend of making movies wherein highly skilled race car drivers are forced into becoming getaway drivers for ruthless criminals. In this case, John Cusack will be playing the ruthless criminal who does the forcing, and Jane will be playing the driver who does the driving.
Now that Lily James has finally filled the title role, and Richard Madden has agreed to play the charming prince, Disney’s upcoming live action version of Cinderella can begin to fill out the rest of its cast. The Wrap is reporting that the first step director Kenneth Branagh is taking in order to achieve this goal is to sign up The Borgias star Holliday Grainger as one of Cinderella’s wicked stepsisters. As we all know, wicked stepsisters come in pairs, so expect some other young actress with experience doing period work to also be announced for the film shortly. Maybe one of the girls from The Tudors?
Now that Clint Eastwood has taken over the directing duties on the film adaptation of the stage musical hit Jersey Boys, which famous actors can we expect him to recruit in order to bring Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons to life? Might we be getting a Hugh Jackman? Possibly a Neil Patrick Harris? What other name actors like to sing? Surely we won’t get a Russell Crowe, will we?
Turns out the answer is no on all counts, because Deadline is reporting that Eastwood wants to take a big risk and cast the movie with the same stage actors who have made the musical a success night in and night out. Likely this strategy is making the bean counters over at Warner Bros. tear their hair out, but it’s also one that’s undoubtedly going to make fans of theater squeal with delight the world over. It turns out this could be some talented up-and-comer’s big break in the exciting world of moving pictures.
