I’ll be foregoing my usual snark in favor of presenting a simple community service message. If you live in NYC, or will be visiting next weekend, or live near enough to commute in to the city… then your plans are set for the last week of February.

BAM, or the Brooklyn Academy of Music, is hosting Monsters & Murderers: The Films of Bong Joon-ho from February 25th through March 1st with the director himself in attendance for two of the screenings. Starting Thursday through the following Monday, the BAM Rose Cinema will be showing Memories of Murder, Mother, The Host, Barking Dogs Never Bite, and a collection of Bong’s short films. He’ll be on-site for a Q&A after the screenings of Mother and The Host (630pm screening only). The series description from the BAM site is below.

A box office hit in his native South Korea, Bong Joon-ho has not only become a fanboy favorite for his keen genre filmmaking instincts, black sense of humor, and mastery of suspense, but also a critical darling for his uncanny ability to subvert genre while simultaneously delivering the thrills. BAMcinématek marks the upcoming release of his latest, Mother, with this showcase of his work to date.”

Mother opens in limited release on March 12th. Seriously, if you haven’t seen the man’s films I can’t recommend them enough. And if you get the chance to see them on the big screen you owe it to me yourself to go.
